Lewisham Council is seeking a Corporate Health & Safety Manager to lead our approach to health, safety, wellbeing, and statutory compliance. You will ensure the Council meets all legal duties, codes of practice and regulatory expectations across a diverse operational environment.

This is a key strategic role, responsible for shaping and delivering a comprehensive corporate health & safety service and providing trusted professional advice to senior leaders, managers, members.

What’s the role?

The postholder will lead the development and delivery of the Council’s Health and Safety policies and management system, ensuring statutory compliance across the Council. This will include overseeing inspection regimes, managing risk assessment programmes, and ensuring that remedial actions are implemented effectively and within agreed timescales. The role will also lead audits to promote continuous improvement and a strong health and safety culture.

Acting as the Council’s principal source of expert advice, the postholder will provide guidance on health, safety, wellbeing and statutory compliance to management and Members. The role will attend Council committees and deputise for the Head of Assurance when required. You will lead a team of four corporate health and safety officers to support service delivery.

What we’re looking for

You will bring a strong understanding of health, safety, welfare and statutory requirements, with experience of applying these across large, complex organisations. Using your expertise, you will shape and deliver effective corporate health and safety strategies, policies and management systems, ensuring compliance while driving continuous improvement.

You will be a confident and influential leader, able to engage credibly with senior officers, Members, Trade Unions and a wide range of stakeholders. With a proven track record of managing teams and delivering results under pressure, you will communicate clearly, build strong relationships and use your professional qualifications (IOSH or NEBOSH Diploma) and experience to make a tangible difference to organisational performance

Location

The job is primarily based in Laurence House, 1 Catford Road, London SE6 4RU,, but we operate a hybrid approach where you will be required to work both in the office and from home on a regular basis.

Salary

£60,633 - £62,742 per annum (P07)

N.B: All appointments will be offered at the minimum spinal column point (SCP) for the grade of the role. The only exception to this will be when matching current salary (up to the maximum of the scale), which is subject to evidential proof.
