Are you confident, adaptable, and passionate about working with young people? Do you enjoy supporting learning and making a positive difference in the classroom? Whether you are considering a future career in teaching or are simply interested in gaining valuable experience working in an educational setting, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.
Malbank School and Sixth Form College is seeking an enthusiastic and reliable Cover Supervisor to join our team. This role provides a valuable insight into classroom life and is well suited to individuals who enjoy working with young people, thrive in a dynamic environment, and are keen to develop skills that are transferable across education and other people-focused careers.
About the Role
As a Cover Supervisor, you will play a key role in ensuring learning continues smoothly when teachers are absent. Using pre-prepared lesson plans, you will supervise classes across a range of subjects, maintain a positive and purposeful learning environment, and encourage students to remain engaged and on task.
You will work closely with teaching and support staff to build strong, respectful relationships with students, helping them feel supported, safe, and confident in their learning — even when routines change.
This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. From leading lessons and supporting learning activities to contributing to wider school life, you will develop valuable skills in communication, classroom management, and behaviour support. While this experience is particularly beneficial for those considering teaching in the future, it is equally well suited to individuals who are interested in education, youth work, or developing experience working with young people in a professional setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise classes and deliver pre-prepared lessons in the absence of teaching staff
- Maintain a calm, structured, and positive classroom environment
- Support and encourage students who may need extra reassurance or guidance
- Prepare classrooms, learning materials, and resources as required
- Provide occasional support to Teaching Assistants or with wider school activities
- Promote positive behaviour and uphold the values and expectations of the school
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure continuity of learning
What We’re Looking For
- Experience working in an educational setting would be an advantage but is not essential.
- GCSEs in English and Maths (or equivalent)
- Confidence in leading groups and managing classroom behaviour
- An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, supporting students with additional or complex needs
- A flexible, proactive approach with strong communication skills
- A genuine commitment to helping young people succeed
Why Apply?
This role is ideal for graduates, aspiring teachers, or individuals considering teacher training who want first-hand experience of leading classes, managing behaviour, and supporting student learning in a secondary school environment.
Application Requirement
As part of your application, please provide clear and specific examples of your previous experience that demonstrate your suitability for the role. This may include:
- Experience supervising or leading groups of young people
- Supporting learning, engagement, or classroom behaviour
- Working independently or as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes for students
