We are looking for a creative digital content producer to help tell the story of the Department for Education’s work through engaging social media and digital content.
You do not need previous government experience to apply. We are interested in your creativity, judgement, writing skills and ability to make clear, engaging content for different audiences.
In this busy, fast-paced role, you will create audience-first content that brings education priorities to life across digital channels, using graphic design, short-form video, clear copywriting and platform-native storytelling.
You will understand what captures attention online and be able to adapt trends, formats and creative techniques in a way that is accurate, accessible and appropriate for a public sector organisation.
You will also help the team use emerging creative tools, including AI, in responsible and practical ways to improve ideas, production and workflow.
Job description
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Create engaging visual, written and multimedia content for social media channels, including graphics, short-form video edits, animations and platform-native formats.
- Develop creative ideas for campaigns and everyday content, using audience insight, performance data and social media trends.
- Turn complex information into clear, accurate and accessible content for different audiences.
- Write clear, engaging copy for social posts, videos, graphics and other digital content.
- Work with colleagues across communications, policy and ministerial teams to develop content from brief to publication.
- Use insight and evaluation to understand what works and improve future content.
- Support content planning, publishing and scheduling when needed.
- Share creative ideas, solve content problems and help colleagues understand what makes effective social media content.
- Work collaboratively and in partnership with content creators and influencers.
- Adapt content for different audiences, including internal audiences and the wider education sector.
- Explore and test AI-powered and emerging creative tools, sharing practical recommendations for how the team could use them responsibly.
We welcome applications from candidates seeking part time or compressed working pattern. However, due to the nature of the work and the shift coverage required, the minimum number of contracted hours for this role is 30 hours per week over a 4 day period.
Person specification
We welcome applications from people with relevant experience in social media content and production.
Essential Criteria:
- Demonstrate sound knowledge and experience of creating engaging content for social media and an understanding of how different formats work across platforms.
- Demonstrate good understanding of graphic design. You will be confident using graphic design or creative production tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent software, with a working knowledge of basic video editing or motion graphics.
- Ability to write clearly and accurately, turning complex information into engaging copy and content that people can easily understand.
- Demonstrate and in-depth understanding of social media platforms, audience behaviour, content trends and emerging creative techniques, and know how to use them in an organisational setting.
- Comfortable using insight, evaluation and performance data to make content decisions and improve future work.
- Demonstrate strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills, working well with others, explain your ideas clearly and respond constructively to feedback.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage a demanding workload leading on and coordinating several pieces of work at the same time, respond to changing priorities and deliver high-quality content to deadlines.
- Demonstrate a passion and interest in public service and in how digital communications can help people understand government work.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and keen interest in emerging creative technologies, including AI-powered tools, and able to show how new tools, platforms or techniques could improve content creation, engagement or ways of working.

Stage 1: Civil Service Numerical Test (CSNT)
When you have completed your personal information, you will be asked to complete the CSNT. You must achieve the minimum pass mark to progress to the next stage.
Stage 2: Civil Service Verbal Test (CSVT)
When you have completed the CSNT, you will be asked to complete the CSVT. You must achieve the minimum pass mark to progress to the next stage.
It is important you allow enough time to complete the test online (within 24-48 hours is recommended), and obtain the results before you can complete your full application online prior to the test closing date and time.
Do not leave completing the tests until the last minute in case you experience any access or technical issues. There may not be technical support available after business hours.
While the tests should work on most operating systems and modern browsers with a good internet connection, we cannot guarantee that every combination will work. At the beginning, the test will check which browser you are using, and alert you if it is likely to be incompatible.
It is highly recommended that you complete the online tests on a desktop computer, not a mobile phone or tablet.
If you are unsuccessful in passing the online tests you will be unable to continue any further in the application process. If you successfully pass the tests, you will then progress to stage 3 of completing the full application.
Stage 3: Written Application

Stage 4: Interview
The interview will be a 2-part process:
Part 1 - Prepare and deliver a short presentation (approx.10 minutes) to the panel. Candidates will be asked to present a portfolio showcasing examples of relevant work. This may include video production, social media campaigns, digital content, creative assets or other multimedia projects. Candidates should clearly explain their role and contribution to each example.
Part 2 - The interview will last approximately 60 minutes. You will be asked questions on the Behaviours & Technical skills listed in the advert. We may also ask you some follow-up questions.
Behaviours are the actions and activities that people do which result in effective performance in a job. We want to get an understanding of the actions and activities that you have done (or would do) that result in effective performance.

Terms and conditions of candidates transferring from ALBs and NDPBs
Bodies that are not accredited by the Civil Service Commission and are not able to advertise at Across Government on Civil Service jobs will be treated as external new starters and will come into DfE on modernised terms and conditions with a salary at the band minimum.
Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission but do not have civil service status will be offered modernised terms and will not have continuous service recognised for leave or sickness benefits. Salaries should be offered at band minimum, but there is some flexibility where this would cause a detriment to the individual.
Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission and do have Civil Service status will be treated as OGD transfers. Staff appointed on lateral transfer will move on to pre-modernised DfE terms (unless they were on modernised terms in their previous organisation). Staff appointed on promotion will move on to modernised DfE terms. Staff will transfer over on their existing salary (on lateral transfer) and any pay above the DfE pay band maximum will be paid as a mark time allowance. Staff moving on promotion will have their salaries calculated using the principles set out in the attached OGD transfer supplementary information.
