About the recipient

The individual is female, 7 years old and resides in Beverley. They require a dedicated and suitable person to support them due to having a combination of neurodevelopmental and learning needs. These affect her mobility, coordination, safety awareness, emotional regulation, sensory processing and ability to manage changes and transitions. She therefore requires close adult supervision and support when accessing activities and the community.

She is a sociable, affectionate and engaging child who enjoys spending time with familiar people and developing positive relationships. She enjoys swimming, imaginative play, sensory activities, drama, video games, scooter outings and spending time in the community. She particularly enjoys animals and has pets at home.

About the role

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing one-to-one supervision and support to maintain her safety.
  • Supporting her to access social, leisure and community activities.
  • Planning enjoyable activities around her interests and individual needs.
  • Providing reassurance and emotional support, particularly around changes and transitions.
  • Recognising signs that she is becoming anxious, tired, overwhelmed or dysregulated and adapting expectations accordingly.
  • Providing a calm and low-demand approach when required.
  • Supporting her to understand and manage risks within the community due to her limited awareness of danger.
  • Providing clear, predictable routines and preparing her for changes wherever possible.
  • Responding appropriately and safely if she becomes emotionally dysregulated.
  • Building and maintaining a positive, trusting relationship with her.
  • Working collaboratively with her parents and following agreed routines, strategies and guidance.
  • Providing the family with reassurance that she is receiving safe, consistent and person-centred support while in the Personal Assistant's care.

About the candidate

The suitable candidate must:

  • Be motivated, proactive and able to work on their own initiative.
  • Be patient, caring and understanding.
  • Have good communication skills and be able to communicate clearly and consistently.
  • Be able to provide calm reassurance when the child feels anxious or overwhelmed.
  • Be able to build a warm, positive and trusting relationship with the individual to both encourage and support them.
  • Ideally have previous experience of supporting children with additional needs, Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities and/or physical disabilities, although the right values, approach and willingness to learn are equally important.
  • Be confident supporting a child who can experience emotional dysregulation and behaviours that may challenge.
  • Understand that behaviour may communicate anxiety, sensory overwhelm or an unmet need.
  • Be comfortable providing close supervision due to reduced safety awareness.
  • Be committed to promoting the child's independence, inclusion, dignity, choice and wellbeing.
  • Be mindful of physical and mobility needs and able to support activities safely.
  • Be flexible in their approach to activities and the hours of support where necessary.
  • Be dependable and able to provide consistent support.
  • Be flexible to accommodate the hours of work where necessary.
  • Desirable to have use of own car, to transport individual to social activities
  • Be comfortable with animals to assist with the individual's household pets.
