Are you the kind of person who finds peace in a perfectly tiled backsplash or a flawlessly painted room? Do you have the technical “know-how” and the patience to teach others how to stop a leaking tap or safely change a socket?

We are seeking an expert DIY Home Improvements Facilitator to lead our comprehensive “Home Essentials” program. This role is designed for a skilled communicator who can transform a daunting list of household repairs into a series of achievable, confidence-boosting wins for our participants.

The purpose of this role is to equip participants with the fundamental skills required to maintain and improve a domestic property. You will guide learners through a hands-on curriculum that uses safety, precision, and the “right tool for the job” philosophy. Your goal is to ensure that every student leaves with the practical ability to handle common home emergencies and aesthetic upgrades independently.

You will be responsible for:

  • Delivering high-quality, practical instruction across the following core modules, Power Tools & Fixings, Demonstrating the safe and correct use of a Combi Drill. Teaching the identification of various drill bits (masonry, wood, metal).
  • Guiding students on how to select the correct wall plugs and fixings for different wall types (plasterboard vs. solid brick). Carpentry & Cutting: Explaining how to select and use the correct saw for specific wood-cutting tasks.
  • Domestic Electrics: Instructing on safe working practices around electrical fittings. Demonstrating how to strip wires, replace a 3-pin plug, and safely replace a wall socket.
  • Tiling & Preparation: Teaching the logic of planning a tile layout for kitchens or bathrooms. Hands-on training with tile cutters and hand tools for shaping tiles around obstacles.
  • Decorating Excellence: The art of preparation: How to prep walls and ceilings for a professional finish. Painting techniques to achieve smooth, streak-free results.
  • Plumbing Maintenance:How to drain a radiator and clear blocked/smelly sinks. Step-by-step guidance on isolating taps and accessing washers in various tap styles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Facilitation: Lead intensive sessions that balance clear demonstrations with supervised student practice.
  • Health & Safety Oversight: Enforce strict safety protocols, particularly regarding electrical work and power tool usage.
  • Resource Management: Ensure all “practice walls” and plumbing rigs are reset and that consumables (tiles, wire, paint) are stocked.
  • Consultative Teaching: Provide “real-world” troubleshooting advice for specific problems participants may be facing in their own homes.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Work well as part of a team, friendly, adaptable, approachable with skill that are multi-trade, with proven competency in basic plumbing, electrics, tiling, and carpentry.
  • While previous teaching or training experience is an advantage, we are primarily seeking individuals with strong industry expertise. We welcome the opportunity to discuss how your professional background and unique skill set can be adapted for this instructional role.”
  • The “Safety First” Mindset: A deep understanding of domestic safety standards (especially electrical safety).
  • Communication: The ability to explain torque or voltage in a way that is accessible to a total beginner.
  • Detail-Oriented: You care about the 1% that makes a DIY project look professional.
  • Encouraging: You can turn a “DIY disaster” story into a positive learning experience.
  • Instructional Background: Previous experience in a training, coaching, or facilitation role, with a proven ability to lead workshops and demonstrations.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to translate technical “trade jargon” into simple, accessible instructions for beginners.
  • Curriculum Delivery: Experience following a structured lesson plan while remaining flexible enough to troubleshoot “real-world” DIY scenarios brought in by participants.

Safety & Compliance

  • Health & Safety Awareness: A thorough understanding of domestic safety standards, particularly regarding electrical safety and the safe handling of power tools.
  • Risk Management: Experience in maintaining a safe working environment, conducting safety briefings, and supervising the use of PPE.
  • Personal Attributes
  • Patience & Empathy: A supportive approach to teaching individuals who may have high levels of “DIY anxiety.”
  • Attention to Detail: A commitment to teaching the “professional finish”—ensuring students learn to do the job correctly, not just quickly.
  • Organisational Skills: Experience in managing workshop resources, including kit inventory, tool maintenance, and workstation setup.

Optional Qualifications:

  • Recognized trade qualification (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ) in Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrics, or Multi-Trade.
  • Optional formal teaching or training qualification (e.g., PTLLS, AET, or equivalent).
  • Optional First Aid at Work certification.
