Job summary
This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking at developing their regulatory knowledge in the Defence environment. The successful candidate will be working within the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator's Team (DNSR), within the wider Defence Safety Authority (DSA), with a key responsibility to provide Regulatory advice and guidance.
Within DNSR, the Transport team is responsible for regulating the transportation of Class 7 Dangerous Goods within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) whilst acting as the Defence Competent Authority on behalf of Secretary of State for Defence.
With a significant increase in activity across the DNE, transport will have a key role to play supporting a variety of national and international endeavours. Current transport operations are undertaken by Road, Rail and Air. Sea transport capabilities are in the process of being established in support of enduring requirements across the DNE.
This role is responsible for regulating the various Class 7 Transport activities in support transport operations. You will be responsible for seeking assurance that transport activities are being undertaken in accordance with DNSR Regulation and UK Legislation.
This is achieved through conducting regulatory compliance inspections, undertaking operational proficiency inspections, reviewing safety cases, witnessing training activities and assessing the demonstration of nuclear emergency response arrangements, at various locations around the country.
Due to the nature of the business there will be routine engagement with a significant number of stakeholders including Defence, Civil and wider Regulatory personnel. This will require frequent travel around the UK as well as foreign travel to the US and France.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
Your main responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
- Develop and maintain arrangements and procedures within DNSR to enable the regulation of Class 7 Dangerous Goods Transport.
- Influencing Nuclear Safety across Class 7 Transport activities in support of the DNE, by providing regulatory advice and guidance.
- Conduct assessment of Package Design Safety Reports in support of issuance of Certificate of Approvals.
- Undertake assessment of the DNE Nuclear Emergency Response Arrangements.
- Support the development and implementation of the DNSR Emergency Response capability.
The role offers the opportunity for hybrid and flexible ways of working which are fully supported and combines working from home, office work at Abbey Wood and regular visits to other sites and Nuclear Facilities. Where responsibilities interface, there is collaboration with other defence and civil, statutory regulators. It is anticipated that approximately 60% of your time will be at either Abbey Wood offices or on site, however this is open to agreement with your Line Manager and can vary from week to week.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance.
