Vac Description

The term ‘Special Educational Needs’ (SEN) has a legal definition. Young people with special educational needs have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most others of the same age. These young people may need additional learning support beyond that given to others of the same age. The Local Authority (LA) will need to carry out an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) of the child or young person’s needs, based on specialist advice. If the Authority then decides that the young person needs special help, they must produce an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan). This plan sets out all of the young person’s needs, the support required, and the placement they should attend. The EHC Plan is a legally enforceable document.

The post-holder will be required to carry out duties associated with EHCN statutory assessments for young people with special educational needs, including writing EHC Plans that detail provision and placement, as well as reviewing and monitoring progress, in accordance with the Children and Families Act 2014 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice 2015.

In line with Sutton’s policy of educating young people within their local community wherever possible, the post-holder will be required to monitor the suitability of out-of-borough placements and identify opportunities to bring students back to Sutton where appropriate.

The post-holder will coordinate the case management system and support provision that improves outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities, as well as their families.

The post-holder will report to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Service Manager and the Head of Special Educational Needs.
