Job summary

Do you want to contribute to providing a strong evidence base for the UK’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support the transition to zero-emission vehicles?

Have you got experience of applying coding skills to process data from large databases and conducting statistical analysis?

Can you present complex information to a range of audiences and ensure key messages are understood?

If so, we’d love to hear from you!

The Official Statistics and further analysis produced by the Department for Transport’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Statistics team provides the statistical evidence base for the UK Government to assess progress and determine policy in relation to charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

The UK government has committed to ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars after 2030, with the transition to zero-emission vehicles requiring sufficient charging infrastructure to meet increasing demand.

To support this ambition, the department requires an individual who can develop and enhance the statistical evidence base and work closely with a range of policy and analytical stakeholders to meet developing demand.

This is a high-profile area with significant policy, media, and ministerial interest. The post offers a great opportunity for a statistician, skilled in analysis and dissemination, to contribute to net-zero targets.

Joining our department comes with many benefits, including:

  • Employer pension contribution of 28.97% of your salary. Read more about Civil Service Pensions here
  • 25 days annual leave, increasing by 1 day each year of service (up to a maximum of 30 days annual leave), plus 8 bank holidays a privilege day for the King’s birthday
  • Flexible working options where we encourage a great work-life balance.

Job description

The role will primarily focus on analysis and dissemination relating to the provision of public charging infrastructure. The post holder will be responsible for the production and development of Official Statistics and further ad hoc analysis.

You will work with emerging open data to meet the department’s growing and evolving analytical needs. This will require discussion with stakeholders to identify needs and priorities, analysis of available and novel data sources to meet these needs, and clear communication of outputs to ensure they interpreted and used appropriately.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  1. Producing timely Official Statistics outputs for electric vehicle charging infrastructure publications and the associated government grants. Engaging with stakeholders to ensure these outputs remain relevant and targeted in an environment with developing interests.
  2. Disseminating, explaining and communicating analysis, outlining findings clearly alongside the limitations of the data, to technical and non-technical audiences.
  3. Working proactively with colleagues in analysis, policy, press office, private office and with stakeholders to define their statistical needs and delivering an analytical work programme which balances these needs.
  4. Building and maintaining strong relationships with our industry supplier to ensure that data provision meets evolving stakeholder needs.
  5. Contribute to the migration of data storage and processing to Google Cloud Platform tools and R. Explore the analytical potential of new open data feeds and work with data engineers and suppliers to develop them further.
  6. Responding to ad hoc requests for data and analysis from key stakeholders within the department and externally.

Please note that the role profile is for information purposes only - whilst all elements are relevant to the role, they may not all be assessed during the recruitment process.
