We are looking for a motivated and proactive Environmental Health Officer to join our Housing & Regulatory Services team. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified professional who is passionate about improving housing conditions, protecting public health and making a positive impact on local communities.
As an Environmental Health Officer, you will play a key role in delivering housing enforcement activities across the Borough, undertaking both reactive investigations and proactive inspection programmes to ensure residents have access to safe and well-managed accommodation.
About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Environmental Health Officer, you will be responsible for a varied and interesting caseload, including:
- Investigating complaints relating to housing conditions and standards and taking appropriate enforcement action where necessary.
- Delivering the Council's Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) licensing function, including inspections, compliance monitoring and maintaining housing records.
- Responding to enquiries and complaints relating to empty homes.
- Inspecting and monitoring licensed caravan sites.
- Conducting formal investigations, gathering evidence, preparing legal documentation and supporting legal proceedings.
- Assisting with the administration of Disabled Facilities Grants and Housing Assistance programmes.
- Responding to public health-related issues, including filthy and verminous premises and public health funerals.
- Working collaboratively with internal and external partners, including Planning, Building Control, Environmental Protection and Community Safety teams.
- Contributing to housing-related projects, initiatives and service improvements.
- Preparing reports and presenting findings to elected Members and partner organisations.
- Supporting the development of trainees, students and work experience placements.
About You
We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed individual who:
- Holds a recognised qualification in Environmental Health or a related discipline.
- Has experience of housing enforcement, inspection and regulatory work.
- Demonstrates a sound understanding of relevant housing and public health legislation.
- Can investigate complex issues, gather evidence and communicate decisions effectively.
- Has excellent organisational and report-writing skills.
- Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with residents, landlords, colleagues and partner agencies.
- Can work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Holds a full driving licence and can travel throughout the Borough as required.

Salary range
- £43,440 - £48,675 per year
