General Instructor

An opportunity has arisen to join Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), as an operational General Instructor Leading in Incident Command or Live Fire in the Learning and Development department at Wray Park Training Centre, Reigate, Surrey.

INCIDENT COMMAND - We are seeking an instructor to lead on Incident Command and Fire Fighter to Crew Commander Development. It is expected that the successful candidate to attend a Breathing Apparatus Instructor course (if not already held) and support this subject. There will be further opportunities to support the department depending on requirements which could include Operational Training, such as Recruit Training, Technical Rescue, IECR, Apprenticeship and Development.

LIVE FIRE INSTRUCTOR – We are seeking an instructor to lead in Live Fire and support the department depending on requirements which could include Operational Training, such as Recruit Training, Technical Rescue, IECR, Apprenticeship and Development.

Internal Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Staff – Interest is accepted for competent Crew Commanders and Watch Commanders, including those with experience in Incident Command or Live Fire disciplines. Candidates who do not hold an Instructing (PTLLS or Level 3 award in Education and Training) and/or Assessors (CAVA or A1 full assessors award) qualification will be supported and developed to obtain these.

For Live Fire, candidates should ideally hold at least one Live Fire instructor qualification and be willing to undertake further training to achieve all required disciplines.

There is also the opportunity for a 12-month secondment or permanent post.

External Candidates – Applicants must currently be working within a Fire and Rescue Service.

For Incident Command, candidates must hold a minimum rank of competent Watch Commander and possess an instructing qualification (PTLLS or Level 3 Award in Education and Training), an assessing qualification (CAVA or A1), and be trained in XVR and Incident Command instructing.

For Live Fire, candidates must hold a minimum rank of competent Crew or Watch Commander and possess instructing (PTLLS or Level 3 Award in Education and Training), assessing (CAVA or A1), Breathing Apparatus, Compartment Fire Behaviour Instructor, and Tactical Ventilation qualifications.

You will be required to maintain operational competencies by carrying out a duty shift per month at one of our Stations at your substantive rank.

Job Introduction

You will be responsible for the research, development, and delivery of all learning materials for your subject area, including maintaining the standards of other instructors.

As this role is of an operational nature, working in line with nationally agreed conditions, where flexibility is required for some evening and weekend working.

The role will be paid at WCB rate if already a competent WC or you have successfully achieved an appropriate Instructor, Assessing (CAVA / A1) and Teaching Qualification (PTLLS or Level 3 award in Education and Training). Prior to this, the role will be paid at WC Development rate.

This role attracts an additional 10% enhancement due to the flexible nature of the role.

Annual Leave - dependant on length of service: 26 days initially, increasing to 29 days after 5 years, plus 8 bank holidays.

Salary – Developing Watch Commander - £44,038 per annum plus 10% or Watch Commander B £48,202 per annum plus 10% based on a 42-hour working week.

Additional Information

You will be working as a member of our Learning and Development Team.

You will be based at Wray Park Training Centre, Reigate and will deliver training both from the centre and across any of SFRS Fire Stations.

Incident Command - Shortlisted candidates will need to design and deliver a 10-Minute PowerPoint presentation on Incident Command aimed at Recruit Fire Fighters, followed by an interview.

Live Fire – Internal - Shortlisted candidates will attend an Interview. External – Design and Deliver a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation on any Breathing Apparatus procedure that they deem most important to Recruit Fire Fighters, followed by and Interview.
