Make a difference to young people in your community!School governors are usually members of their local community who care about education and young people. Governors are part of the biggest volunteer work force across the country and we have around 3000 governors in Nottinghamshire. Governors don’t get involved with the day to day running of a school; instead they support and challenge the school’s leadership team to drive school improvement.
Being a governor is for everyone and we really need governors who reflect our communities in Nottinghamshire. We know that everyone has experience and skills they can bring to this role. If your career is just starting, being a governor is a great way to build your CV and, if you are retired or moving to retirement, or not in employment, what a great way to keep active, use your experience, make friends and learn new skills!
You will receive comprehensive induction and access to ongoing CPD to help you do this role and there is lots of support and information available. Support includes access to the Nottinghamshire Association of Governors, who run a termly webinar network for those new to governance. Governors are also entitled to time off work to undertaken governance duties (and many employers allow paid time off). You may also be able to claim for expenses, in line with the governing board’s policy.
Please note that all candidates must meet the governor eligibility criteria and provide information to the school so that they can carry out a DBS check and a section 128 check before governors within 21 days of appointment or candidates will be disqualified.
If you are over 18 and can spare time to attend around 3 governor meetings each term ( this could be more or less depending on the board’s structure and held in the later afternoon or evening) plus undertake termly monitoring visits in school hours, then contact us to find out how to be a school governor!
