Job summary
We are currently looking for a Head of Diagnostics to join our Research & Development Function within the Scientific Research & Innovation group.
This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire.
Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

The Scientific Research and Innovation Group delivers public health impact, world-leading research innovation, and a unique regulatory proposition for patients and users via an ambitious Science Plan which will balance innovation against sustainability and affordability. It is divided into 6 sub-Groups (functions); Innovation Accelerator, Clinical Investigations and Trials, Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety.
The R&D function, provides a broad array of scientific expertise across a range of biological products, including both medicines and diagnostics. This R&D is focused on regulatory science, standardisation and assay development activities. In addition, the programme is critical to ensure regulatory readiness for innovative products, across the product lifecycle (development, manufacture, licensure and safe use) and to ensure preparedness to deal with pandemics, safety issues with biological medicines (including adverse events or contaminations) and counterfeit or falsified medicine identification.
Job description
What’s the role?
The primary purpose of the role is to provide the strategic direction and leadership for regulatory science-focused research and development relating to diagnostics. This includes genomic diagnostics for cancer detection, neurodegeneration, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the evaluation of the serological responses of vaccine candidates against priority pathogens, including models of virus challenge. The role will also liaise closely with scientists in the Standards Lifecycle and Control Testing Functions of SRI as well as Devices colleagues in Healthcare Quality and Access and Safety & Surveillance Divisions of MHRA and apply their highly specialist scientific knowledge in Diagnostics and high consequence pathogens to optimise Agency activities in the UK and Internationally.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide leadership for and manage the Diagnostics Team in the wider R&D function and oversee the personal development of both staff and students. Devise and direct an internationally recognised programme of R&D that addresses key regulatory scientific questions of benefit to patients pertaining to Diagnostics which results in scientific data that are publishable in high quality scientific journals and attracts sustained external grant funding.
- Provide strong cross-agency leadership for diagnostics across the product lifecycle with a particular focus on requirements by the UK National Health Service, through engagement with experts in trials, licensing, product and test harmonisation and surveillance of marketed products.
- Represent the Agency externally as an expert in regulation and standardisation/harmonisation of diagnostics and provide state of the art guidance to agency colleagues and external organisations including UK healthcare organisations, the World Health Organization (WHO), the in vitro diagnostics industry, and academia; to establish and lead national and international collaborative work activities.
- Manage and be accountable for the safe use of laboratory facilities and equipment (including those at Bio-containment Level 3) in which staff work and are designated laboratory supervisors, ensuring that these facilities remain fit for purpose and safe places to work.
