Job description

We’re looking for an experienced engagement professional to lead cross government engagement on behalf of the Public Sector AI Adoption team. This is a recently established team in GDS leading on AI adoption across the public sector.

This is an exciting and high-profile opportunity to join a growing team The postholder will be responsible for developing the engagement strategy for the Public Sector AI Adoption, including engagement for the AI Exemplar Programme, a cross-government department initiative led by GDS to pilot and scale AI projects within departments.

The successful candidate will be required to communicate confidently and effectively at all levels whilst demonstrating initiative, attention to detail, and resourcefulness both on their own and within a team.

Person specification

As Head of Engagement, you will:

  • Establish and run the stakeholder engagement plan for Public Sector AI Adoption, working closely with senior stakeholders across government to have a plan that is responsive to opportunities and engaging
  • Provide high quality written, graphics and oral advice and briefings to a range of audiences, developing a core script, including briefing ‘lines to take’.
  • Provide strategic advice to Government Chief AI Officer and the wider team on the approach to and prioritisation of engagement
  • Lead roundtables, workshops and other engagement events with both suppliers and OGDs as required
  • Work closely with comms and parliamentary teams in GDS, DSIT, Cabinet Office and Number 10; and OGDs when needed.
  • Line manage a small team of engagement and strategy experts.

As a line manager, you will be responsible for working with your members of staff to define their objectives, as well as managing their development and performance.

Essential criteria

You will have:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to communicate concisely and coherently to a variety of audiences.
  • The ability to thrive in uncertain and ambiguous circumstances, confident in taking the lead, prioritising and setting direction.
  • Confidence to take the initiative to solve problems, and deliver results collaboratively and independently.
  • Significant experience of building and maintaining effective relationships, and using a variety of tools and channels to achieve the planned outcome.
  • Significant experience of working with multiple senior stakeholders across a large and diverse audience.
  • Experience of communicating to non-technical audiences and producing briefings, presentations, business cases and contracts.
  • Experience in handling sensitive information, displaying tact and diplomacy whilst maintaining confidentiality.
  • A good understanding of digital product development and delivery, with some knowledge of AI preferable.
  • Experience of leading engagement on high profile policy questions.
  • Experience of working with AI initiatives.

Office attendance
