Foreign National Offender Returns Command’s (FNO RC) objective is to protect the public by deporting or removing FNOs who commit criminal offences, and to actively monitor and manage FNOs released into the community. We manage each case through the legal process, negotiating barriers such as travel documents and ensuring that the use of immigration detention is appropriate.

The Immigration Prison Teams (IPT) are based in 13 embedded hubs across the United Kingdom, with some teams carrying out mobile roles across the region.

Job description

IPT officers engage with Foreign National Offenders (FNOs), and a range of stakeholders across the Prison and IRC estate. The role is about managing relationships that assist in progressing cases to removal or release. IPT officers (at all grades) are required to be able to engage empathically with an FNO, a prison governor, an immigration caseworker, the voluntary sector, law enforcement and offender managers.

This position is based within the South London Mobile Team (Croydon office as the base), with the expectation to primarily work at HMP Thameside. Additionally, there will be a requirement to travel to other HMP sites, Immigration Removal Centres, and Immigration Reporting Centres within the region as needed.

Successful candidates must undertake, and pass, Personal Safety Training at Level 2 and attend a three-week, expenses paid, induction course, which will be held in Croydon.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engaging with case owners, prison staff and FNOs to progress and conclude cases. Manage these relationships, through clear and empathic communication
  • Promoting compliant returns to FNOs, including the Facilitated Removal Scheme (FRS)
  • Carry out FNO induction interviews and surgeries, working to establish nationality, identity and other relevant information that assists in progressing the deportation case
  • Serve deportation paperwork and explain the process to FNOs, manage data effectively, accurately updating systems such as ATLAS
  • Be mindful of FNO health and vulnerability issues, escalating concerns to prison staff and case owners
  • Attend and support HMPPS at Assessment Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) reviews when Immigration is a direct trigger to the FNO’s wellbeing
  • Carry out FNO screening and substantive Asylum, NRM interviews in Prisons and IRCs
  • As a point of contact for IPT to deal with FNO Wing Applications and deal with any queries from prison staff

Working Pattern

Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis.

Successful candidates will need to be able to attend for all shifts including early starts, late night finishes, and overnight shifts.

Shift times are:

  • Early: 0700-1424
  • Late: 1136-1900
  • Weekends: 0900-1700

Training

You will receive full training and support to do the job. Training takes place initially in the classroom and then continues on the job with a mentor who supports you until you are fully confident in the role. Travel

Due to the nature of the role and its geographical location, there may be an expectation to travel to other remote prison sites in the region.

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work under pressure with limited supervision in a prison setting.
  • Sound interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills.
  • The ability to work in a team and understand how your role fits into the wider operation.
  • Familiarity with computers and a basic knowledge of Word and Excel.
  • Strong written skills and document drafting ability.
  • Confidence working collaboratively and empathically across teams and with external partners.

Licences

Due to the nature of the work and the geographical area, driving is a key requirement for this role. Applicants must have a full valid UK manual driving licence.

Selection process details

2. Sift – week commencing 9th March 2026

The sift will be held on the Personal Statement and Behaviour Working Together.

Should a high volume of applications be received, an initial sift will be conducted on the Personal Statement. Candidates who pass the initial sift will then be progressed to a full sift that will consist of all the remaining elements submitted (Lead Behaviour). Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the initial sift will not have their remaining submitted elements scored and will only receive a sift score for that assessed at the initial sift.

3. Interview – week commencing 6th April 2026

If you are successful at sift stage, you will be invited to an interview that will be Behaviours (as listed in the job advert) and Strength based questions.
