Independent Person - Tyne and Wear Pension Fund
Administered by South Tyneside Council, the Fund provides defined benefits for employees and former employees of local authorities, alongside a diverse range of scheduled and admitted bodies across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.
With around 397 current and former employers and 188,832 members, the Fund operates at significant scale. Its assets were valued at approximately £15.3 billion, with a funding level of 132%.
As both a shareholder and client of Border to Coast Pension Partnership, the Fund has substantial assets invested or managed through pooled arrangements. It also delivers pensions administration services to the Teesside Pension Fund under a commercial contract, further extending the reach and significance of its work.
The Fund is pursuing an ambitious programme of continuous improvement and is committed to being forward-looking, well governed and responsive to the evolving LGPS landscape. As Independent Person, you will have a unique opportunity to help shape this work and support the Fund in delivering its ambitions.
At a defining time for the sector, and as part of the Government’s LGPS Fit for the Future reforms, you will bring independent expertise, constructive challenge and assurance to the Fund’s governance, investment, funding and administration activities.
Working closely with the Fund’s LGPS Senior Officer and the Pensions Committee, you will influence informed decision-making, scrutinise complex advice and contribute to the continued development of strong, effective governance arrangements.
We are looking for a high-calibre candidate with exceptional pensions experience and a strong understanding of the LGPS.
You will bring independence of thought, excellent judgement and the confidence to test complex advice, together with the ability to build trusted, constructive relationships across the Fund’s governance framework.
The appointment is for a three-year term commencing on 1 January 2027. The anticipated commitment is approximately 15–25 days each year, including attendance at Committee meetings, training events and related activities.
This is a rare opportunity to make a meaningful contribution at a strategic level, helping to shape the governance and future direction of a major public sector pension fund. If you have the expertise, insight and independence to make an impact, we would be delighted to hear from you.
