Information Officer
Job summary
The Supreme Court (UKSC) is the United Kingdom’s highest court of appeal. It hears appeals on arguable points of law of general public importance, concentrating on cases of the greatest significance. The UKSC is the final court of appeal for all United Kingdom civil cases, and criminal cases from England, Wales and Northern Ireland and (in certain cases) Scotland. The Court plays an important role in the development of UK law. The impact of UKSC decisions extends far beyond the parties involved in any given case, helping to shape our society. Its judgments directly affect everyday lives both in the UK and overseas through the work of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC).
The UKSC is a small non-ministerial department. The vision of the Court is to be world leading and the staff (known as the administration) support the Supreme Court Justices to deliver the highest quality judgments in a unique and high-profile location in Parliament Square, which is open to the public. We are a values driven organisation which puts our users at the heart of everything we do.
We welcome a large number of visitors to the Court each year – members of the legal professions, people working in legal systems abroad, students from schools, colleges and universities, tour groups, and members of the general public – all of whom are welcome to drop in at any time when the building is open. As an Information Officer the postholder will have a key role in making any visit a great and interesting one.
Job description
Information Officers are a vital part of the Communications Team, working to educate the public on the work of the Court and ensure that we deliver the best quality of visitor experience to all. The team also operates the switchboard and responds to enquiries and information requests. A professional approach is essential as the team acts as the first and only point of contact for a high proportion of Court users and visitors.
The post holder will also host guided tours around the Grade II* listed building, supporting groups of up to thirty visitors at a time from schools, colleges and universities as well guiding the wider public as they explore the Court’s unique legal and constitutional position, its architectural features and artwork. Full training will be provided to the successful applicant.
The post holder will also support the Court’s Education and Visitor Services Manager with the day-to-day management of the Court’s exhibition and will help to design and create new educational activities and content. The Information Officers supports the wider Communications Team through the promotion of events, the creation of newsletters, and the delivery of outreach programmes as well as supporting the organisation of private event hires and international events in the Court’s spaces.
The role requires the holder to be based at the Court during normal office hours (usually between 9am – 5.00pm). This job may require occasional early (8am) and late (7.30pm) out of hours working but this is exceptional and plenty of notice would be given.
