Job summary
Are you an experienced communicator? We are looking for someone with experience and drive to play a key role in our Channels and Content team.
We are looking for someone who can help us to deliver effective internal communications to over 5000 colleagues spread across the country.
ONS is transforming to provide a helpful, professional, innovative, capable and efficient service to society. The Communications and Digital Publishing Division (CDP) plays a key role in managing the internal and external environment to support this transformation and the delivery of our strategy.
The Internal Communication team is part of CDP and plays a critical role in engaging colleagues across the organisation by building awareness and understanding of a clear transformation narrative, unifying delivery around our strategy, and motivating and building pride in the ONS.
Job description
Role Responsibilities:
The Content Manager will be responsible for creating high quality content and ensuring that key corporate messages are communicated in a clear open way across our main channels.
The role of the Content Manager will be to produce quality content for ONS’s internal channels that ensures that the organisation's key messages reach and are understood by all audiences across the organisation. A key part will be to support and promote colleague voice across our channels and help build a sense of collaboration and pride in our work and organisation.
The Content Manager will also take an active role in supporting the development of the content approach for the new intranet.
Person specification
Essential criteria:
- Experience in devising and implementing communication content that supports and aligns with our mission and strategic objectives.
- Evidence of providing editorial advice to teams and individuals across the office to support colleague voice.
- Experience of implementing communications best practice across the organisation to ensure consistency of approach and best use of channels.
- Awareness of the external environment in which ONS operates and able to ensure issues are flagged and communicated to the organisation where appropriate.
- Proven ability to provide creative ideas that will help improve the reach of internal communications and build engagement with our core narrative.
- Experience of managing content across a range of channels, including the intranet and Viva Engage, and the ability to advise colleagues on best practice when using our channels.
Qualifications
A relevant qualification in Communications, PR, Marketing or Journalism, or relevant experience in one of these fields.Behaviours

Stage 1 – Application
The assessment process at the application stage will be based on your work history, CV, skills, experience, and personal statement. It is important that your application is tailored to highlight the skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the role.
A personal statement is required at application stage, the maximum word count allowed is 1250, which should not be exceeded. You should provide evidence for each essential skill criterion listed in the person specification. As these criteria are scored, it is advisable to give clear examples for each one, including the impact of your actions, ideally utilising the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Please note that Success Profiles Behaviour examples are not required at this stage of the application process.
When a high volume of applications are received, the sift pass mark may be adjusted. Candidates will be invited to interview based on their merit order, with those achieving the highest scores being prioritised. Applicants who score below the adjusted pass mark but still pass will be placed on hold and may be invited to interview at a later date.
Stage 2 – Interview
If invited to interview, you will be assessed using techniques aligned with the Civil Service Success Profiles framework, covering all behaviours and technical skills listed in the job advert.
A written exercise will be required at interview. Further information will be provided to shortlisted candidates on the day of their interview. This exercise will assess candidates against the Technical Skill 'Implementation'.
Interviews will be held online via Microsoft Teams.
A reserve list may be held for a period up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made.
