Job description

The AI International Team leads the UK’s international AI policy across safety and security, opportunities and growth, and bilateral and multilateral partnerships. It works across the Emerging Technologies and AI DG group and closely with colleagues in DSIT, FCDO, the Cabinet Office and No.10 to advance UK strategic interests and deliver HMG’s AI priorities internationally.

The team consists of Senior Policy Advisor-led teams who lead on a geographic portfolio (in this case the Americas), a multilateral portfolio (the G7), and various policy fiches (regulation and others). These are stretching roles at the forefront of the global AI discussion.

The post is responsible for leading bilateral AI relationships with the Americas, in particular USA and Canada, representing the UK in G7 multilateral negotiations, and bringing international perspectives to key AI policy objectives, such as regulation. This is a fast-moving area, and the role’s exact focus is likely to evolve as both the technology and politics change.

Person specification

Key responsibilities:

  • Shape the UK’s international AI partnerships in the Americas, building trusted relationships, supporting senior and ministerial engagement, and advancing bilateral cooperation to further UK AI prosperity and safety objectives. There is a particular focus on the USA and Canada, and this will require engaging across a range of domestic AI policy teams, including those covering investment, infrastructure and AI security.
  • Lead on the UK’s AI positions at the G7 Technology / Digital track. This will require negotiating on behalf of the UK, including line by line text negotiations, consensus-building with international partners, and bridging the gap between domestic and international policy, ensuring that the UK is able to shape the multilateral debate.
  • Manage interdependencies between domestic and international policy, and wider geopolitical considerations, in particular bringing international perspectives to key AI policy objectives, such as regulation.
  • Work closely with colleagues across DSIT, FCDO, DBT, Cabinet Office to align international AI engagement and messaging.
  • Line manage a high-performing SEO, fostering an inclusive, collaborative team culture and supporting capability building across the international AI function.

We are looking for a highly capable and motivated individual who can successfully operate through ambiguity and rapidly build relationships to deliver, with:

  • Excellent influencing and communication skills, and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships, including with senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to excel working independently and with agency; balancing multiple competing deadlines, setting a clear direction and displaying grip to see through priorities.
  • Experience working internationally, preferably in both bilateral and multilateral fora.
  • Experience of working across government on politically sensitive issues.
  • Leadership and line management skills, with the ability to develop and motivate people both from own line management chain and across the wider team.
  • Ability to work in a culture of change, to think strategically and work comfortably with risk and ambiguity.

Office attendance

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
