Investigation Services, which sits within the Agency's Enforcement Group, delivers a range of enforcement activities, both civil and criminal in nature, to support fair and open markets. We do this by effectively enforcing the statutory company and insolvency regimes, maintaining public confidence in those regimes, and reducing the harm caused to victims of fraudulent activity and to the business community.

Job description

As part of the Enforcement Group Directorate, the Investigation Team (Midlands & West) has two opportunities available, with successful candidates based in either Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff or Exeter.

These varied and rewarding roles are essential to the effective delivery of investigation work. You will provide professional administrative support to technical colleagues handling both civil and criminal investigations, while also contributing to the efficient management of team inboxes.

Responsibilities

The Investigation Support Officers will:

  • complete initial administrative actions on investigations, maintaining accurate records and comprehensive case notes to support ongoing enquiries
  • provide administrative support to technical staff undertaking civil and criminal investigations, including urgent and ad hoc tasks within specified timescales
  • carry out first-line analysis of information and data, including HMRC ledgers and bank statements, using specialist software and systems
  • manage outstanding actions and correspondence, including drafting letters from templates, issuing reminders, and updating case management records
  • follow up enquiries and correspondence by telephone and in writing, ensuring timely responses and effective communication with stakeholders
  • monitor and manage team mailboxes, responding to routine enquiries and escalating matters where a more detailed response is required
  • support the planning and delivery of meetings, video conferences and events, including the preparation of agendas, papers, action logs and supporting documentation
  • undertake general administrative duties to support the effective operation of the Directorate, including occasional reception duties and travel to support technical staff where required

Selection process details

As part of the sift process, you will be asked to complete:

Before submission of your application, you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Verbal Test and Civil Service Numerical Test.

Please complete the online tests as soon as possible (or no later than 48 - 72 hours of the application closing date, is recommended), the closing date for the tests is 23:55 on 19/10/2026. If you fail to complete the online tests before the deadline your application will be withdrawn. Guidance for the tests will be available when you are invited to take the tests. You will be directed to the Talogy - True Talent – Scheduled Maintenance Window Webpage for online tests during an outage.

Our online test supplier will be performing scheduled maintenance between 4pm and 7pm on 11th October 2026. You will be unable to access tests during this period.

If you are in the middle of a test when the maintenance begins, your progress will be paused. You will be able to resume your test from where you left off via your application centre once the downtime has ended. Please note that you will not be able to launch any new tests while the system is offline.

Your personal statement should be no more than 500 words and must demonstrate how your personal skills, qualities, and experience align with the requirements of the role. Please ensure your statement references the essential criteria outlined in the person specification.

Should a large number of applications be received, an initial sift may be conducted using the Personal Statement, assessing candidates against the essential criteria. Only those who meet the essential criteria at this stage will proceed to a full assessment of their application. If a candidate does not meet the minimum requirements during the initial sift, the remainder of their application will not be reviewed. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to interview.

Where high volumes of strong applications are expected or received, we may raise the ‘benchmark’ minimum score required at the sift stage. Hybrid Working

Insolvency Service operates a hybrid working policy subject to business need, giving people the flexibility to choose when and where they work and collaborate with others.

Individuals are expected to work from one of the office locations stated in the advert to connect with their colleagues, as required by their role and business team needs. There is flexibility to split the working week, spending a minimum of 60% in the workplace, which includes the office, site visits, court etc.
