The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Leisure Officer to join our Leisure Service. The Leisure Service Team are responsible for the delivery of the Council’s Sport and Leisure Facility Strategy, this identifies the need for the provision of new facilities associated with new housing developments, community development and works closely with our contractors on the continued delivery of leisure facilities across the authority. All of these play a major role in enhancing the opportunities for residents to live healthy lives.

In this role, you will; work closely with the existing postholder and our leisure contractors who manage the Council’s five leisure centres and Playhouse Theatre, to ensure continued high level service delivery to the residents of North Somerset. You will be responsible for monitoring the contractors’ performance, under the new agency model management contract, actioning repairs and maintenance for the leisure buildings and monitoring of associated budgets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring leisure centres are meeting contract responsibilities including responsibilities including areas such as health and safety, cleanliness and compliance and organising rectification for non-conformance.
  • Arrange and attend monthly client meetings with contracted sites with the Leisure Manager, recording and actioning any areas of concern when required.
  • Identifying and actioning council liable repairs and maintenance issues, through partnership working with contractors.
  • Under the direction of the Leisure Manager monitor the delivery of the leisure contract, including the new agency delivery model.
  • Monitor the repair and maintenance budgets, under the direction of the Leisure Manager.

Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.

Work Style

However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.

This role falls into the category of Flexible Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:

  • 2-3 days in the office (pro rata)
  • Works both from home and the office, depending on the task at hand.
  • Training is provided to help balance work-life and manage time effectively, with an emphasis on communication for team touchpoints and planning in-office days for collaboration.

About You

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about the provision of sport, leisure and community facilities, and who possesses the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • NVQ level 2 literacy & numeracy or equivalent.
  • NVQ level 4 qualifications or equivalent to demonstrate technically specific skills relating to the appropriate area of work.
  • Experience of budget monitoring.
  • Ability to work with contractors and engage with the general public.
  • Ability to manage/organise own work to meet agreed deadlines.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of high value contracts and monitoring responsibilities, ideally in the leisure industry.
  • Experience of client meetings with contractors.
  • Additional modular vocational units or other technical qualifications specific to particular areas of the service.
  • Awareness and general understanding of the service area technical protocols, regulations and relevant legislation.
  • Experience of working with external partners to achieve outcomes.
