Local Taxation Inspector

Wyre Council is seeking a proactive and detail-focused Local Taxation Inspector to join our Revenues team. This is a varied, customer-facing role that plays a vital part in ensuring Council Tax and Business Rates are applied accurately and fairly across the borough.

About the role

You will undertake inspections of new, renovated and existing domestic and non-domestic properties to determine Council Tax and Business Rates liability. The role involves liaising with property owners, builders and the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), gathering evidence, and ensuring properties are correctly recorded on the Council’s systems.

You will also represent the Council at Valuation Tribunal hearings where required and contribute to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of local taxation records.

Key responsibilities

  • Inspect new and altered domestic and commercial properties to identify Council Tax and Business Rates liability
  • Negotiate and agree completion dates for new and renovated properties, issuing completion notices where appropriate
  • Submit inspection reports and evidence to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA)
  • Monitor and action VOA updates to ensure the Council Tax database remains accurate
  • Register new properties and liable parties, applying discounts and exemptions as appropriate
  • Carry out inspections to confirm entitlement to discounts, exemptions and disabled band reductions
  • Investigate occupation dates and liability for business rates
  • Maintain inspection and property databases and produce management reports
  • Represent the Council at Valuation Tribunal hearings when required

What we’re looking for

You will be organised, confident and comfortable working independently in the field as well as collaboratively within a team. You will have strong communication skills and the ability to handle challenging situations professionally.

Essential requirements

  • Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE or equivalent)
  • Practical knowledge of Council Tax and Business Rates
  • Experience of working in a busy environment and dealing with difficult situations
  • Strong communication skills, both face-to-face and over the telephone
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain accurate records
  • Full UK driving licence and access to your own transport

Desirable

  • Institute of Revenues, Ratings and Valuation (IRRV) qualification
