Job description

This job could be for you!The Energy Security and Resilience Directorate ensures energy security in the short- to medium-term, driving DESNZ and cross-Government efforts to maintain a resilient energy system. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work at the heart of energy security, working closely with both Parliament and industry leaders to delivery on energy security objectives.
Your primary role will be to lead on delivery across energy security and resilience. You will work closely with policy experts and lawyers to drive delivery of high-priority and time-pressured work. This will include working through others to unpick complex technical questions, engaging with industry stakeholders, and preparing clear and robust written briefings and products. In this role you will have the opportunity to work closely with senior leaders and Ministers, and gain first-hand experience of Parliamentary procedures. You will also be responsible for maintaining oversight of the wider team’s requirements and future delivery needs.
You will also oversee the governance of large, high-profile forums, including the ministerially chaired Energy Security and Resilience Taskforce with membership drawn from senior leaders across the energy sector. Supported by an HEO, you will oversee the delivery of these forums, including ensuring the smooth running of meetings as well as briefing Ministers and senior civil servants. You will also be expected to take a strategic, forward-looking approach to ensure the forums effectively support delivery of strategic objectives.
The intention is for this role to include line management responsibilities. You would be responsible for defining objectives, as well as managing development and performance, and maintaining staff wellbeing.
The successful applicant will be expected to work flexibly to deliver on the priorities of the wider team, including emergency response work where required. They will also be supported through an active learning and development culture, including a directorate committee dedicated to Learning and Development and access to training fitted to individual experiences and interests.
Candidates will be required to secure Security Check (SC) clearance before beginning in post. Candidates are welcome to apply from any DESNZ location though non-London candidates must be willing to travel to London to attend parliamentary and leader-level meetings.
As a line manager, you will be responsible for working with your members of staff to define their objectives, as well as managing their development and performance.
Essential Criteria
This role would be suited to a proactive individual who is able work collaboratively, develop strong relationship, and find solutions through complex technical problems.
A successful candidate will be:
- Solutions-focussed, able to work with colleagues and experts across a range of professions to deliver solutions to technical problems.
- Highly organised and efficient, able to work at pace to respond to urgent needs, while managing multiple workstreams and competing priorities.
- Confident in building strong working relationships, and in working through others to explore and deliver robust solutions and products.
- An effective communicator, able to confidently and clearly communicate in writing and verbally, including producing clear, accurate advice and products for senior leaders and Ministers, including on complex issues.
- Able to work independently on workstreams, including proactively anticipating and mitigating challenges, and driving delivery through others (including, most likely, 1x HEO).
Desirable Criteria
- Knowledge of the energy system and/or parliamentary process would be helpful but not essential.

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.

Online test
