Job summary
At the Rural Payments Agency, the Operational Mapping team plays an important role in supporting British agriculture. The team maintains the Rural Land Register, a large digital mapping system covering over 2.7 million land parcels, helping to ensure that funding is delivered accurately and on time to farmers and rural communities.
Job description
We’re looking for an Operational Mapping Team Leader to join our Reading based team, where you’ll build your expertise and help ensure land mapping is accurate supporting payments being made correctly. You’ll support a small team, link mapping updates to scheme delivery, and use your attention to detail, data skills and clear communication to solve problems and improve processes.
You’ll handle a range of mapping queries, including more complex cases, using tools such as aerial photography, satellite imagery and mapping software. You’ll investigate issues, provide clear outcomes to support decisions, and help make team processes simpler and more effective.
This role suits someone who enjoys problem-solving, working with data, and supporting farmers and rural communities.
Responsibilities
As a Mapping Team Leader within the Rural Payments Agency, you will:
- Analyse maps and spatial data to understand land boundaries and changes
- Maintain accurate land records, ensuring quality standards are met

Person specification
You must be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience listed in the essential criteria
Essential Criteria:
Ability to interpret and analyse maps, spatial data and aerial imagery, and to investigate complex mapping discrepancies using sound judgement where standard data or guidance is limited
Experience of using data and insights to monitor performance, identify trends and support improvements to mapping processes, tools and guidance
Confidence in using digital and mapping systems, with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools
Experience of supporting and guiding others, contributing to a positive, inclusive team environment and effective performance management
Ability to communicate clearly with a range of audiences, explaining complex information and working collaboratively to influence outcomes
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise work, manage competing demands and deliver accurate outcomes at pace
Ability to manage work and monitor progress, ensuring tasks are completed to a high standard and within required timescales

Location
As part of the pre-employment process for this post, successful candidate(s) will be able to agree a contractual workplace from those locations listed in this advert. The agreed contractual workplace is then the substantive and permanent place of work for the successful candidate(s).
Where the location is ‘National’ the successful appointee should discuss and agree an appropriate contractual location in line with both Defra’s location policy and site capacity, prior to proceeding with pre-employment processes.
The agreed amount of time spent at a workplace for this post will reflect the requirement for Civil Servants to spend at least 60% of their working time in an organisation workplace with the option to work the remaining time flexibly from home. Working time spent at a workplace may include time spent at other organisational locations including field-based operational locations, together with supplier, customer or partner locations. This is a non-contractual agreement which is consistent with common Civil Service expectations.

Salary
New entrants are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.
