The Media Relations Office is responsible for proactive and reactive media handling. We’re a busy, fast-moving team who deal with the nation’s top journalists and news desks on topics that matter to wide audiences. We have a rare opportunity for a new media officer who can help us anticipate issues, react effectively to breaking news stories, write sparkling copy for press releases, blogs and social media and help us reach new audiences.

We’re looking for an experienced media officer with a strong news sense to help handle major data and corporate stories from across the organisation and assist with the ONS podcast.

Job description

This role is open to those with demonstrable experience of media relations, PR and press office handling as well as broader external communications to wide audiences.

If you enjoy collaborating with a wide range of people internally and externally, using your written and verbal communications skills and powers of persuasion, this role could be for you.

Role Responsibilities

  • Promote ONS and its outputs to a wide and diverse range of audiences by devising and implementing innovative and effective public relations campaigns which maximise the use of traditional media, social media and other digital channels.
  • Produce high quality editorial content on corporate and statistical issues, including articles and press releases, briefings and media statements for news outlets, social media and other channels.
  • Assist with the media handling of specific publications, topic areas and corporate issues.
  • Organising and hosting media briefings.
  • Generating story ideas, building positive relationships with journalists and commentators.
  • Media monitoring and preparation of media summaries.
  • Organising and conducting media training and coaching for colleagues at all levels across the ONS.
  • Responding to media calls on statistical and corporate issues.
  • Participate in the out of hours press office on-call rota.
  • Assisting with production of ONS podcast.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • Strong awareness of news and current affairs, staying informed and can respond promptly and accurately to any queries.
  • Demonstrable experience in media relations work by building and maintaining relationships with journalists, managing media enquiries, and effectively communicating our messages to the public.
  • Excellent writing skills, drafting press releases, writing reports, or creating content for our website and social media channels, the ability to write clearly and persuasively.
  • A broad knowledge and understanding of UK government, politics, and the role of official statistics.

Security Clearance

Stage 1 – Application

The assessment process at the application stage will be based on your work history, skills, experience, CV, and personal statement. It is important that your application is tailored to highlight the skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the role.

Your personal statement should be no longer than 1250 words. You should provide evidence for each essential skill criterion listed in the person specification. As these criteria are scored, it is advisable to give clear examples for each one, including the impact of your actions, ideally utilising the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

Please note that Success Profiles Behaviour examples are not required at this stage of the application process.

In instances where a high number of applications are received, the sift pass mark may be adjusted, and candidates will be invited to interview based on merit order, i.e., those with the highest scores.

Stage 2 – Interview
