Job description

In this role of Instructor Mentor, you will be responsible for supervising a group of prisoners in either a workshop setting or around the establishment. Duties could include supporting Prisoners to Upcycle furniture and create unique pieces that will be sold to a local charity shop. Maintaining the Prison grounds, be part of the Quick Fix crew or the development of a potential new workshop. This role requires a level of practical skill that could include previous employment history or through hobbies and interests.

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Induct prisoners to the workshop/area of work and train them in aspects such as health and safety, Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH), machinery and tools usage. Ensuring tools and equipment and safe and properly accounted for.
  • Provide support for prisoners where required-tailor learning and training requirements to individual needs. Managing quality standards within the workshop.
  • Supervise, manage and control prisoners decently, safely and securely whilst carrying out all activities, with responsibility for their performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development.
  • Contribute to risk, Health and Safety assessments.
  • Actively contribute to prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, Assessment Care in Custody & Teamwork (ACCT) and Security Information (SIR) when required and contribution to Incentive Earned Privileges (IEP) reports.
  • Quality assurance against the work been completed in the workshop's, including quality checks.
  • Ordering of products/items for the workshop to maintain production.
  • Providing administrative support for workshop activities.
  • Must be competent when using a variety of tools.
