Become a Mounted Police Support Volunteer

Leicestershire Police – Rural Crime Team
Location: Leicestershire
Minimum Commitment: 8 hours per month


Do you have a passion for horses and a desire to make a difference in rural communities? Leicestershire Police is looking for dedicated Mounted Police Support Volunteers to join our Rural Crime Team. Working both with or without your horse you’ll be helping to tackle issues affecting our countryside and providing support to the community.

What You’ll Be Doing:

As a Mounted Support Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in rural crime prevention and community engagement. Your tasks may include:

  • Supporting rural crime prevention initiatives and local policing operations.
  • Building relationships with farms and rural businesses while exercising your horse.
  • Increasing police visibility in targeted areas to deter antisocial behaviour.
  • Offering crime prevention advice and tack marking services.
  • Promoting safety and good citizenship, especially among vulnerable groups.
  • Educating officers on horse handling and equine safety.
  • Representing Leicestershire Police at schools, equestrian clubs, and community events.

What You’ll Need:

  • Be aged 18 or over.
  • Be an experienced and confident rider (subject to assessment).
  • Have access to a horse and suitable transport.
  • Hold adequate insurance for your horse and property.
  • Be a team player with strong communication skills.

What training and support you will receive:

You will be joining an established team of experienced and supportive volunteers. We have a Lead Volunteer for the team and part of their role is to support other volunteers, they will be able to assist you with any problems or questions you may have throughout your time as a Police Support Volunteer with Leicestershire Police. You will also be supported by and work closely with the Rural Crime and Volunteers in Policing Teams.

You will take part in an induction to help you understand your role and how the force works, along with training on how to use specialist databases, IT systems, crime prevention and security marking to enable you to complete your role.
