Do you have a passion for heritage, collections care, and making local history accessible to all? Rutland County Council is looking for a proactive and enthusiastic Museum Officer (Collections) to join our friendly team at Rutland Museum and Oakham Castle.

This is an exciting opportunity to support the preservation, documentation, and interpretation of Rutland’s unique heritage, while contributing to exhibitions, public engagement, and day‑to‑day museum operations.

About you…

To be successful you will need to be:

  • Educated to A level standard
  • Organised and curious
  • Able to communicate with individuals at all levels including members of the public and volunteers
  • Able to contribute positively to a dedicated museum team
  • Experience with databases, ICT, and handling museum objects will help you thrive in this role, along with an enthusiasm for learning and developing new skills
  • Experience in collections handling, documentation, and working with a wide range of people

About the role…
As The Museum Officer (Collections), you will:

  • Support the care, preservation and documentation of the collections at Rutland Museum and Oakham Castle
  • Research objects, prepare exhibitions, assist with outreach and learning activities, and support the day‑to‑day operational running of the sites.
  • Play a key part in cataloguing and maintaining accurate records using MODES or similar systems and contribute to social media content that promotes our heritage

Please note: The role includes working with volunteers, subject specialists, and partner organisations, as well as occasional emergency call‑out duties and attendance at external events that grow awareness of the museum.

The successful applicant for this post will be subject to a basic check by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The costs for the DBS are paid by us.

Museum Officer (Collections) interviews will be held face to face in week commencing 20 April 2026. Please be advised this could be subject to change, in which case we will give appropriate notice.
