Job summary

The Globe & Laurel magazine is the Corps Journal of the Royal Marines (RM). It is a high-quality colour magazine that is published every two-months. It is a journal of record with historical value as well as being a key product that supports the morale and ethos of not only serving Royal Marines but also the wider Corps Family including Reservists, RM Cadets, Veterans and families. It is also used to support recruitment by acting as a means of demonstrating to those considering joining the Corps what life in the Royal Marines is really like. In addition, an Apple/Android compatible ‘App’ and a Web Reader version are separately available.

The Globe & Laurel Magazine Staff is part of the RM Corps Secretariat, which itself is part of the Office of the Commandant General Royal Marines within Navy Command Headquarters. Its offices are situated on the Ground Floor of Normandy Building, HMS EXCELLENT, Whale Island, PORTSMOUTH, Hants, PO2 8ER.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

To publish, every two-months, the Globe & Laurel as a high-quality unclassified journal so that the activities and interests of the Corps of Royal Marines are promulgated both in printed and digital formats.

The post holder is to:

  • Be responsible for the financial and business control of the Globe & Laurel magazine so that any expenditure of public funds is done in the most cost-effective manner and that the Globe & Laurel Magazine Fund is run efficiently in accordance with Charity Commission guidelines and the Charity’s objects and avoids making a loss.
  • Arrange for the distribution of the journal so that serving Royal Marines and other subscribers receive their copies on a regular basis and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that the professional development needs of staff are met; that any training shortfalls are identified and addressed and that appraisal reports on subordinate personnel are completed at mid-term and annually.
  • Acquire, collate and edit features and photographs for the journal, which reflect the current operational, training, administrative and regimental aspects of life in the RM.
  • Monitor the negotiation of advertising sales.
  • Implement sales and other policies directed by The Globe & Laurel Magazine Fund Board of Trustees.
  • Liaise with Service and civilian authorities with regard to articles, printing, publication, sales and distribution of the journal within establishments and ships and to the public.
  • Arrange for the packing and distribution of the journal to subscribers and outlets.
  • Monitor the journal’s subscriptions, free copy and distribution lists.
  • Manage sales and other income to The Globe & Laurel Magazine Fund.
  • Be a member of the RM Heritage and Ethos Committee with a responsibility for heraldry issues.

Person specification

The post holder is required to:

  • Have a high standard of written English, including spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of naval (including RM) and military terminology plus current naval and RM organisation, roles and rank structures.
  • Have a reasonable level of knowledge of RM history, traditions and ethos.

Information Technology

The post holder will require:

  • A good knowledge of the Apple Macintosh operating system.
  • In-depth knowledge of the following software:
  • Word (word processing).
  • Quark Xpress (page making).

A good knowledge of the following software:

  • Photoshop (processing and manipulation of illustrations and graphics)2.

An apprenticeship is a combined package of work and training. Apprenticeships normally last between 12 months - 3 years, depending on the level of the apprenticeship.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance.
