Commander Royal Navy Youth and Cadets (RNYC) is responsible for the RN’s three MoD sponsored cadet forces; the Combined Cadet Force, the Volunteer Cadet Corps and the Sea Cadets Corps (the latter is managed by the independent charity, the Marine Society and Sea Cadets). RNYC HQ has a national remit, spanning over 21,000 cadets and 8,000 adult volunteers, activity is delivered utilising a range of MoD capabilities (infrastructure, boats, aircraft, weapons) as well as through civilian provision. The RNYC also manages connections with youth organisations, namely RN Affiliated Sea Scouts and elements of UK Girl Guides, it also delivers the Service’s Youth Engagement Team.
RNYC provides opportunities for young people to exercise responsibility and leadership, and to learn how they can be developed through a variety of military and challenging training activities. Imparting a basic knowledge and understanding of Defence and the role of the Armed Forces in society, RNYC invests in Future Navy skills whilst improving life chances for young people.

Job description
The Role of the Training Safety Advisor (TSA) South is part of a national team, employed regionally to provide Safety critical support to Combined Cadet Force (CCF) RN/RM sections and to ensure activities are safe and compliant.
TSA South will have an area of responsibility broadly based south of M4 and M25 but with a degree of flexibility to cover peak requirements. This is up to approximately 60 schools. These schools are a mixture of (but not limited to) Public, Grammar, Academy, University Technical Colleges, and independent schools. CCF RN/RM is offered to both Boarding and Day School children.
Key Responsibilities
As a Safety Advisor, you will have the opportunity to:
- Visit schools within your predefined area, work with Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAV) who are attached to individual CCF RN/RM Sections, and provide them with elements of safety training, complete assurance work and write reports to capture your findings from the visits.
- Lead on the development of CFAV safety capability and deliver low level training within sections to continually improve safety awareness and competence.
- Advocate and champion the Defence Safety Strategy, proactively contributing to the continuous improvement of Safety delivery across Defence, specifically within the cadet space.
- Act as the Safety lead and point of contact on medium and large-scale activities (Camps & Courses) where there is an inherent risk posed to cadet’s welfare.
- Work with local commercial training providers to ensure that their safety arrangements are in place and meet MODs internal requirements.
- Complete a proactive checking process and provide assurance to Navy Command that submitted permissions to train (Form 17’s) are suitable and sufficient, ensuring a Safe System of Training.
The expectation is to work in an agile way, flexing to support evolving priorities and projects. You may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as may reasonably be required.

Essential Criteria
- Level 3 in Occupational Safety & Health OR can demonstrate an expert level of knowledge/experience in at least one Adventurous Training discipline.
- Experience of building strong, influential professional partnerships with a broad range of diverse and demanding customers within a large and complex environment.
- Effective communication skills, including experience of communicating confidently about Safety issues and solutions, providing constructive and appropriate feedback to senior leaders.
- Experience of using an evidence-based approach, including the analysis of Safety data, to find opportunities for improving a safety culture.
- Awareness of the contents Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and subsequent applicable H&S Regulations e.g. Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
