
Network Services Technician - Highways and Traffic Services
Join our Highways and Traffic Services team as a Network Services Technician and play a vital role in supporting the efficient movement of people and vehicles across our public highways. We require keen individuals with the drive and desire to help manage the demands of Reading’s Highway network.

About the role:
Reporting to the team’s Assistant Engineers and the Network Services Manager, in this varied and rewarding role, you’ll assist in the development, design, and implementation of network management schemes, road safety measures, traffic signals, parking solutions, and transport initiatives.
These will include:
- Parking management schemes
- Casualty reduction schemes
- Traffic management measures (e.g. cycle and pedestrian improvements)
You'll be working closely with other Council departments, contractors, Councillors, and the public, delivering schemes in line with national standards and Reading Borough Council’s Local Transport Plan.
As part of the role, you will also be supporting teamwide responsibilities including the support of intelligent transport systems (including operation of Reading’s Urban Traffic Management & Control centre) and event co-ordination and support (e.g. Reading Half Marathon and Reading Festival).
About you:
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong customer service and communication skills, across face-to-face, telephone, and written channels
- A clear understanding of highways, transport, and parking management issues
- The ability to manage a diverse workload effectively
- IT competence, including the use of AutoCAD (or similar GIS-based drawing packages), databases, and spreadsheets
- A proactive, positive approach and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Experience of working in a busy office environment (preferably in transport, highways, or parking, but not essential)
The role will involve working outdoors as well as in the office. It will be preferable that the applicant has a full, clean driving licence, although the ability to travel using other transport modes will be encouraged.
