Malden Oaks @ Surbiton
Salary: MPS/UPS + SEN 1
Contract: Full Time
Start Date: 1 September 2026
A unique opportunity to join a team committed to putting students’ needs first
Do you believe that positive attachments are at the heart of students achieving their best? Do you recognise that a sense of autonomy is vital to empower students to take responsibility for their actions and decisions? Are you aligned in our thinking that altruism is crucial to the development of self-confidence and a sense of worth?
If these echo your beliefs and you would welcome the opportunity to work in a supportive environment where you have the capacity to build meaningful relationships with students individually and in small teaching groups, Malden Oaks @ Surbiton would be delighted to hear from you.
Due to increasing demand, we are seeking an additional Nurture Teacher to join our committed and professional staff team. Our students often work at age-related expectations in terms of the curriculum, but need considerable support to develop their resilience, social skills and self-esteem.
Our teachers have considerable autonomy, planning a relevant and engaging curriculum for a group of up to 6 students, using their individual specialist interests and skills. Frequent off-site learning opportunities and outdoor activities are encouraged to broaden students’ horizons and make learning real and relevant.
Teachers also plan and supervise social time, creating a safe and homely atmosphere where students learn essential social skills. In addition to small groups, there will be opportunities for individual and paired sessions. These will mainly take place on-site but may also include sessions in the student’s home or in the community (e.g. library, coffee shop).
There is a generous allocation of PPA and meeting time, high quality CPD and supervision support, in recognition that we need to fully invest in our staff so that they can transform our students’ experience of education.
We understand that teachers may be apprehensive about teaching in Alternative Provision and we would encourage you to watch our video (www.maldenoaks.org) or arrange a visit. This will give you the opportunity to meet current staff and gain an insight into our students, their views, and the difference you could make to them.
If you are on Instagram, find us at maldenoaks@surbiton to see the types of activities and learning opportunities afforded to students.
Supporting our students in developing positive relationships, self-confidence, resilience and creativity is crucial to our ethos. Our success is not measured solely by academic results, but by the views of our past and present students.
Please visit www.maldenoaks.org for further information, including students’ views. If you have any queries, please contact Sarah Bann, Head of Lower School at stsb@maldenoaks.rbksch.org.
Visits to the school are welcome. Please note that this post is likely to be based at the Malden Oaks @ Surbiton site in Surbiton; however, all staff are appointed to work across the boroughs of Kingston and Richmond.
Malden Oaks is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. All new staff will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and complete safeguarding training. Please read our full safeguarding policy, which can be downloaded from this page.
As part of our recruitment process, we may carry out social media checks on shortlisted candidates. These checks are conducted to support our commitment to safeguarding and maintaining a safe and professional working environment.
