Oral Health Promoter

Job description

Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

Play a key role in ensuring that people living in the city are supported to have good oral health.

Join our small yet but dedicated team to facilitate the promotion of good oral health to all living within Leicester City. Our service aim to reduce health inequalities between different populations in Leicester by understanding the barriers faced by communities and working with them to overcome them. As part of the Oral Health Promotion Service within the Public Health team, you’ll encourage settings such as nurseries, pre-schools, childminders, primary schools and others, particularly those in areas of high deprivation to participate in the Supervised Toothbrushing Programme.

Based either at home or at City Hall, you’ll be positively contributing to the maintenance and uptake of the supervised toothbrushing programme, whilst contributing to a wide range of oral health promotion activities.

This is a full time, permanent, working 37 hours per week over 5 days, with the ability to work occasionally outside normal office hours, e.g. for meetings, training delivery, parents evenings, events, etc. You’ll have flexibility in hybrid working being both office based, at City Hall or working remotely from home.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll work with early years providers and schools within Leicester to promote the supervised toothbrushing programme. You’ll provide guidance and governance to those already participating in the programme, including the provision of additional promotional activities within their setting. You will also engage with early years providers and schools who do not participate in the supervised toothbrushing programme in a targeted manner. You will also provide ongoing support via training, phone calls, emails and in person visits.

You’ll engage with key stakeholders including dental practices, public health teams, NHS organisations and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise organisations to raise awareness of oral health issues and deliver the oral health programmes in the city. You’ll conduct training sessions to explain health concepts, ensuring they are engaged and understand the key messages. You’ll also support the team to develop and promote key national campaigns.

What you’ll need

You’ll be a highly motivated individual who is passionate about health improvement across the life course. You’ll have excellent communication and interpersonal skills which you’ll use to develop and deliver health promotion messages, as well as negotiating and persuading partners to join and support oral health improvement programmes.

You’ll be confident in liaising with professionals as well as internal and external stakeholders. With planning skills, you’ll be able to deliver projects in a community setting whilst being able to effectively organise your workload and problem solve issues. And importantly a team player, who positively contributes to achieving shared goals..

Appointment will be subject to Enhanced DBS check and full driving licence.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities.
