Job summary

The Ministry of Defence, Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from cyber and digital transformation, police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, psychologists, storekeepers, and policy secretariat staff to support the British Army.

Under the management of the Officer Commanding / Physical & Recreational Training Centre the primary role of a Physical Trainer is to deliver the Common Military Syllabus Physical Development Pathways to Regular and Reserve Phase One recruits whilst ensuring physical fitness and Individual Training Requirements conformance to Permanent Staff.

Please note: Due to the nature of this role, there is a requirement to be onsite full-time.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver the Common Military Syllabus Physical Development Pathways to Regular and Reserve Phase One recruits.
  • Record all Common Military Syllabus Fitness Testing results onto the appropriate databases and provide statistical data to the Chain of Command when required.
  • Programme design and deliver the PD Pathways to Recruits within Re-train Platoon & the Functional Skills Course.
  • Provide the Chain of Command with both verbal and written updates pertaining to the progress of each recruit if and when required.
  • Deliver Individual Training Requirements Fitness Testing to Permanent Staff.
  • Input all Fitness Test data into the Fitness Information Service Software and provide statistical updates to the Chain of Command when required.
  • Provide additional support to the Officer Commanding Physical & Recreational Training Centre when and if required.
  • Provide support to the weekly Physical & Recreational Training Centre equipment maintenance and deep cleaning process.
  • Provide additional support, when and if required, to unit Sports, Health, and Physical Training events outside of the Common Military Syllabus delivery.
  • Attend all Staff Training required to safeguard instructor competency and Continual Professional Development and Annual Deficit Training.

  • Computer literate - experience using the Microsoft 365 package is essential

Selection process details

Assessments

  • You will be asked to deliver a 30 minute gym based PT lesson (your choice of delivery) - equipment can be provided. In line with the MOD’s Specialist Instructional Officer (SIO) Management Practices Policy, potential SIO Physical Training instructors are required to deliver an instructional practice session. This is to demonstrate that candidates have the appropriate knowledge, skills, and experience commensurate with their qualification, as well as their ability to deliver Physical Training outputs in an environment representative of their intended employment.
  • You will be assessed and expected to achieve the output standards below for the Role Fitness Test Basic Training (RFT BT) Part One.
    • A Mid-Thigh Pull Test – You will be required to conduct 1 static lift using a Mid-Thigh Pull Machine that is a static cabled system. Standard required is a pull of 95kg+. The aim of the Mid-Thigh Pull element is to assess muscular strength of the lower limb.
    • A Med Ball throw Test – You will be required to throw a 4kg med ball three times, taking the furthest measurement as your score. Standard required is a distance of 3.3m. The aim of the Seated Medicine Ball Throw is to assess the explosive power of the upper body.
    • A 2km Run – You must be able to complete a 2km run in 10 minutes 30 seconds or less on a 400‑metre athletics track. Heat mitigation measures will be considered on the day. The Physical Trainer testing element will therefore be adapted as necessary to ensure candidate safety. The aim of the 2km run element is to assess candidates Aerobic Fitness.

Candidates will receive a comprehensive brief prior to each element, and a demonstration will be given. Furthermore, Candidates will be given an opportunity to conduct a 10-min warm-up.
