This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a strong background in Development Management and a proven track record of managing or supervising town planning professionals.
About the Role
As a key member of the team, you will:
- Lead and manage a team of planning officers, monitoring performance, caseloads, and ensuring high standards of quality and efficiency.
- Allocate and prioritise work to respond to changing demands, holding regular team meetings and supporting staff development through annual reviews and training plans.
- Handle complex and high-profile planning applications, including major developments and enforcement cases.
- Represent the Council at Planning Committees, Public Inquiries, Hearings, and in Court as an expert witness.
- Liaise with Members, Parish and Town Councils, applicants, and the public to ensure planning decisions align with Council policies and objectives.
- Deputise for the Development Manager and contribute to the development of planning policies and service improvements.
About You
You will bring:
- Significant post-qualification experience in Town Planning, with substantial experience in Development Management and major sites.
- Demonstrated success in managing or mentoring staff, with strong leadership and organisational skills.
- A degree or postgraduate qualification in Town Planning (or equivalent) and eligibility for RTPI membership.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to explain complex planning matters clearly and confidently.
- Experience presenting to Committees and at Public Inquiries or Local Plan Examinations.
- A sound understanding of planning legislation, enforcement, and both urban and rural planning issues.
- A positive, collaborative approach and the ability to work independently and under pressure.
A full driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential, as is the flexibility to attend evening meetings and conduct site visits in rural areas.
