Job summary

Are you passionate about shaping policies that make a real impact?

Join us as a Policy Advisor in the General Register policy team and provide support and advice on company law and policies relating to a range of subjects.

The role involves working on policy areas that cover protection of personal information on the register, insolvency, retention of dissolved company information and overseas companies. The successful candidate will have support to develop their knowledge in those areas.

We are currently working with The Department of Business and Trade to introduce a package of legislative reforms to extend the protection of personal information on the register. You would play a key role in that work and support the development of secondary legislation and its implementation.

Job description

Please note:

  • You will be based at our Cardiff where you will be expected to attend on a regular basis.
  • Companies House cannot offer Visa sponsorship to candidates through this campaign.

As a Policy Advisor the role will include:

  • Working with The Department of Business and Trade, other government departments and key stakeholders to help develop policy and deliver legislative change.
  • Taking ownership of specified work-streams and working closely with colleagues across the business to explain, influence and communicate polices.
  • Helping to analyse and implement legislative requirements that may impact Companies House.
  • Providing policy advice and support on relevant projects and meetings in different business areas.
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Drafting policy papers for consideration.
  • Drafting initial responses in respect of Ministerial and Chief Executive correspondence.
  • Line management responsibility for one of our Policy Coordinators.

  • Is a confident communicator (both verbally and in writing), effectively explaining detailed proposals to ensure understanding and engagement.
  • Is a great team player, able to support senior policy managers and other colleagues with clear recommendations based on expertise.
  • Is able to build and maintain a strong network of stakeholders (internally and externally) and is confident collaborating with colleagues at all levels.
  • Works at pace and sometimes under pressure; juggling competing priorities and delivers high quality work on time.

Where will you be working?

You will be based at our Cardiff office, where you will be expected to attend on a regular basis. We are currently using a hybrid approach to the way we work which provides opportunities for you to be adaptable in the way you work so that you can achieve a healthy balance between your work and home life. The degree of choice you have will depend on your role and your day-to-day work activities. Your manager will agree regular patterns of attendance with you, however you may be required to make yourself available to attend the office more frequently when required to meet business needs.

What will the process look like?

1. Sift

Once the advert has closed we will sift applications - this involves reading through them all, please bear with us as this can take some time. The panel will look at your work history and personal statement and are looking for evidence of the stated points.

We may raise the score required if we receive a high number of applications. We may also choose to take through the highest performing candidates to the next stage. If, after the final stage is completed and roles are unfilled, we will proceed to invite lower scoring candidates to interview.

2. Interview

Companies House uses a blended interview technique, allowing us to find out more about you. We use the Success Profile framework and at interview we will be assessing Behaviours and Strengths.

  • Successful candidates from the sift stage will be invited to attend a virtual interview, which will conducted using Microsoft Teams.
  • You will be asked questions relating to the Behaviours listed in the advert, and Strengths.
  • The lead criteria to distinguish between tied candidates will be the Behaviour: Communicating and Influencing.

3 . Offer

Once all interviews have been completed, you will be notified of the outcome. Offers will be made in strict merit order.

A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles (of the same or lower grade). Subject to business need, if a suitable position opens during this time we may reach out to individuals in merit order.

Working hours

This is a full time position working 37 hours a week.

Security

Please be aware that for this role Security Clearance is required, successful candidates must meet the security requirements for Security Check (SC).

The requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years. Failure to meet the residency requirements will result in your security clearance application being rejected.

Sponsorship

Pre-Employment Checking
