The role and responsibilities
As our Policy Economist Lead, you will play a central role in shaping policies that protect pension savers and support a stable, sustainable pensions system. You’ll bring deep economic insight to some of the most complex questions facing the sector, helping us design regulatory approaches that are fair, proportionate and grounded in strong evidence. Your work will directly influence how schemes operate, how risks are managed, and how savers’ long‑term outcomes are safeguarded.
Working closely with colleagues across policy, legal, actuarial, operational and data teams, you’ll lead the economic dimension of policy development and contribute to multidisciplinary solutions. You’ll also share your expertise to build capability across the organisation, supporting others to develop their analytical and policy‑making skills.
This is a highly collaborative and outward‑facing role, with opportunities to represent TPR in government, industry and academic forums. Through horizon scanning and strategic projects, you’ll help us anticipate future challenges and ensure our regulatory strategy remains effective, evidence‑led and responsive to change.

The role criteria
- Recognised expertise in economics with application in financial markets or pensions.
- Experience leading policy development and shaping regulatory strategy in a government or regulatory setting.
- Ability to conduct advanced modelling, forecasting, impact assessment and cost‑benefit analysis.
- Ability to interpret and apply complex legislation and regulatory frameworks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to senior audiences.
- Experience engaging and influencing stakeholders across government, industry or academia.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and mentoring colleagues.
- Experience in horizon scanning and integrating economic insights into long‑term planning.
