Job summary
We’re looking for an exceptional Team Leader to join our Portfolio Office for a 12-month maternity leave cover to help us make a difference to our planet.
As our Team Leader, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Job description
As a Met Office people leader and project delivery expert, you will provide clear direction and support to a team of technical experts, enabling them to create extraordinary impact and demonstrate project delivery excellence through your guidance.
As a team leader, you will both support the individual and empower your team through effective engagement and collaboration to ensure clear and consistent delivery which meets business need and supports the achievement of the Met Office strategy.
As a project delivery expert, you will use your experience and knowledge to offer professional advice and best practice guidance to those you line manage and the wider project delivery community, working alongside delivery roles as needed to keep your expertise well honed.
Your key duties:
- Lead, motivate and line‑manage a team of project delivery professionals and subject matter experts, creating an inclusive environment where technical expertise is valued, people feel supported, and high standards of performance are sustained.
- Act as an authentic leader and role model, providing clear leadership, direction and prioritisation for the team, ensuring work is aligned to organisational strategy and delivered with confidence and professionalism.
- Act as a project delivery expert, offering hands‑on guidance, coaching and constructive challenge to support effective delivery across projects, programmes and portfolios.
- Work in collaboration with other Team Leaders in Portfolio Delivery to contribute to broader strategy and innovative collaboration to benefit the whole capability.
- Champion professional standards and ways of working, ensuring consistency while encouraging teams to apply judgement and adapt approaches to suit delivery context.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with project leaders, sponsors and delivery teams, promoting partnership working and collective ownership of outcomes.
- Develop and strengthen project delivery capability by investing in people, encouraging learning and knowledge sharing, and embedding a culture of continuous improvement.

Benefits
Alongside your salary of £54,515, Met Office contributes £15,792 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. - £54,515 base pay
- An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
- Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
