Job summary

As part of Department of State you will be an integral part of the Safety, Security, Business Resilience, Technology and Accommodation (SSBRTA) Team. The team provides advice, delivery, and assurance across safety, security, resilience, infrastructure, and information management functions. It has responsibilities across the Department of State area of the MOD but the majority of its work is in direct support of MOD Main Building, where it is based, working to the Head of Establishment at Director Level.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

The Project Support Officer will play a vital role in the Department of State by supporting and managing the delivery of key infrastructure projects within Main Building. This role provides delivery experience of high-profile projects and will provide opportunities for collaboration across Defence, including colleagues in the Strategy, Security and Accommodation teams. Current projects include strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the infrastructure and operational capabilities of Main Building. The role will also involve supporting the department’s strategic planning for the end of the existing Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract and reviewing options for future management of Main Building.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of key infrastructure projects within Main Building, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required security and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with various departments, including accommodation, security, DIO, and the PFI contractor, to ensure the successful implementation of projects.
  • Support delivery of the Main Building PFI Exit (by 2030), PFI Successor arrangements and Main Building modernisation work with the Main Building Improvements and PFI Teams to ensure requirements are delivered.
  • Manage project controls and governance, reporting upwards about the project status and develop project performance reports.
  • Map and manage dependencies and their impact on projects and integrate dependency tracking into the governance cycle
  • ‘On call’ function supporting SSBRTA out-of-hours building incident management on a rotational basis.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant MOD policies and procedures

Person specification

The successful candidate will be supporting the delivery of high-profile projects behalf of the Main Building Head of Establishment, which involves significant infrastructure enhancements and strategic planning to meet the future requirements of Main Building. The successful candidate will have experience in the application of project management techniques and be comfortable in navigating a complex stakeholder environment.

Essential Criteria:

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Relevant Project Management or P3M qualification (APM or similar) or demonstrable experience

Desirable Criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritise and coordinate multiple tasks and activities in a dynamic environment, ensuring deadlines are met while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to build constructive and mutually beneficial working relationships with stakeholders (Civilian and Military).
  • Experience of delivering through others outside of the direct line management including contractors.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
