Job summary

We’re looking for an exceptional Project Support Officer - Level 2 to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Project Support Officer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week. We will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share. Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.

Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2027 there is the potential for it to be extended or made permanent.

Job description

The role of the Project Support Officer at The Met Office covers a diverse range of activities to support the delivery of projects and programmes. The Project Support Officer will enable the smooth running of assigned projects by supporting the respective Programme and Project Management teams through the operation of project management processes.

Your key duties:

  • Administration - Responsible for project/programme file management using robust version control. Organise and schedule project meetings, taking actions and tracking their progress through to completion. Regular monitoring and triaging of incoming emails through team mailboxes.
  • Planning and scheduling - Assist with and maintain appropriate systems to enable effective planning and scheduling. To include arrangement for and supporting project/ onshore and offshore programme workshops.Monitoring and reporting - Assist in maintaining project/programme controls and in producing programme reports.
  • Stakeholder Engagement - Act as the first point of call for project/programme stakeholder visits. Act as the focal point for project responses to external requests for information.
  • Communications - support the maintenance of the project/programme communications site and manage access to related SharePoint sites.
  • Risks and Issues - Assist with and maintain programme and project risk and issue logs.

Person specification

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  1. Experience of working in a project/programme delivery environment, supporting successful delivery through effective day-to-day coordination, and demonstrable experience of teamwork contributing to a high-performing, collaborative and inclusive team culture. (We live and breathe it)
  2. Demonstrable working knowledge of working in a project/programme delivery environment, including project management principles and how they are applied across the project lifecycle. (We’re experts by nature)
  3. Strong planning, organisation and time-management skills, able to prioritise competing tasks and adapt to changing requirements with minimal supervision, with an understanding of maintaining projects and programmes including risk and issue management, and core project controls (e.g., scheduling, cost, benefits and reporting), with the ability to maintain accurate logs and produce clear updates.   4. Demonstrable analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, using data and evidence to identify issues and propose practical options. (We keep evolving)
  5. Experience of administering information and data in line with relevant Government and corporate policies (e.g., GDPR), ensuring appropriate confidentiality, retention and version control. (We’re a force for good)
  6. Possess, or be working towards, a relevant project management qualification (e.g., APM Practitioner or equivalent), or be able to demonstrate equivalent practical experience. (We keep evolving)

As our Project Support Officer, your total reward package will be up to £49,448 annually, which includes:

  • £35,145 base pay
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
