At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose – to improve people’s lives.

About the Team

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated person to join our Trading Standards team in a role focused on enforcing vehicle weight restrictions and protecting key transport infrastructure within Bath.

About the Role

We are a progressive and professional team of officers who work tirelessly to improve people's lives and safeguard our communities. The successful candidate will play a key role in enforcing weight restrictions on roads within Bath, with a particular focus on Cleveland Bridge and other designated routes where vehicle restrictions are in place.

The officer will investigate alleged breaches of weight restrictions using a variety of evidence sources, including camera footage, vehicle records and other intelligence. You will be responsible for conducting investigations, preparing detailed case reports, gathering and assessing evidence, and liaising with partner agencies and legal services where appropriate. Where enforcement action is pursued, the postholder may be required to provide evidence in court or attend legal proceedings on behalf of the Council.

The role includes maintaining accurate records, responding to enquiries from members of the public, and supporting the Council's wider objectives to protect vital infrastructure, improve road safety and help manage traffic impacts across the district.

There are a number of offices available to work from and we offer flexible working arrangements which includes home working for which IT equipment will be provided. The postholder may be required to undertake visits to roads with weight restrictions and also to check signage in situ.

About You

Educated to NVQ Level 4 (or equivalent qualification or experience) in a relevant subject area.

Applications are welcomed from both experienced officers and those looking to develop a career in a regulatory enforcement role.

You will be able to work effectively as part of a team whilst also managing your own caseload and priorities. You have the ability to work to fixed deadlines and manage competing priorities effectively.

We are looking for someone with excellent written, telephone and email communication skills, investigative and report-writing skills, who can analyse information, assess evidence and present findings clearly and accurately.

You will be confident dealing with members of the public, businesses and partner organisations, and be capable of preparing robust case files that may be scrutinised in court. Good organisational skills, attention to detail, and competency in the use of IT systems and databases are essential.

Experience of using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word is essential. Experience of using a case management system, database, Uniform or equivalent records management system would be advantageous.

An understanding of data protection requirements and the handling of sensitive information is desirable.

Knowledge of enforcement practices, evidence gathering, regulatory processes or relevant legislation would be advantageous, although training will be provided to the right candidate.

You are able to follow established procedures and processes accurately and consistently.

A driving licence would be advantageous but is not essential.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the protection of one of Bath's key transport links and help ensure compliance with measures designed to protect infrastructure, improve road safety and enhance the local environment. You will be part of a supportive team committed to delivering high-quality public protection services and making a positive difference to the lives of residents and visitors alike
