Blacon High School – More Than a School

Blacon High School is seeking to appoint a dedicated, proactive and highly organised Reading Intervention Assistant to join our committed team of support staff. This role plays an important part in supporting the work of the English Department and improving outcomes for students through targeted reading intervention and support. You will be amanaged by the Head of Faculty for English.

You will work closely with teaching staff, students, parents and external agencies to deliver effective reading programmes, monitor progress and promote student wellbeing in a busy and supportive school environment.

The ideal candidate will:

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering and implementing specialist reading activities and intervention programmes using relevant expertise
  • Planning and delivering agreed reading activities for individuals and small groups, in collaboration with teaching staff, to meet learning objectives and individual targets
  • Coordinating the work of teaching assistants to support specific projects and shared pupil outcomes
  • Observing and monitoring pupils to assess progress, identify barriers to learning and contribute to reports and reviews
  • Providing appropriate feedback to pupils, parents and staff, tracking progress and linking closly to delivering targeted reading programmes to improve reading ages across the school
  • Liaising with parents/carers, professional colleagues and external agencies to support pupil wellbeing
  • Accessing and updating pupil records to support assessment and progress tracking
  • Preparing, organising and maintaining classroom resources and stock
  • Displaying pupil work to enhance the learning environment and celebrate achievement
  • Supervising pupils in and out of the classroom, including on educational visits, ensuring safety and supporting emotional and physical development in line with school behaviour policies
  • Attending staff meetings, training sessions and professional development activities as required
