Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.

Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a Residential Worker to join our dedicated team supporting children with complex needs at Westminster House. At Milton Keynes City Council, we work together to make our city a better place to live and make every day matter for the children and families we support.

Westminster House provides specialist residential care for children with complex needs, including learning disabilities and behaviours that may challenge. The team focuses on each child’s safety, development and well-being through structured routines, tailored care and consistent support.

You’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality, person-centred care that promotes communication, independence and emotional regulation. You’ll work closely with colleagues and partner agencies to ensure every child receives the right support at the right time, helping them build confidence and life skills. This is a rewarding role where you’ll directly support children and young people in a safe and nurturing environment.

Site-Based role

This is a Site-Based role, and you’ll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Shift Pattern

This role works on a two-week rota, which includes a mix of weekday and weekend shifts:

  • Morning shifts: 7am to 2pm
  • Afternoon shifts: 2.30pm to 9.30pm

Role Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day care for children with learning disabilities, following individual care plans and promoting their well-being
  • Support children through educational, social and leisure activities that build confidence, independence and life skills
  • Communicate effectively using verbal and non-verbal methods, including specialist communication tools where needed
  • Work with multi-agency colleagues to support care planning, safeguarding and positive outcomes for children
  • Develop skills in managing and de-escalating behaviours that may challenge while promoting emotional regulation
  • Maintain accurate and timely written records and contribute to meetings, reviews and reports
Ideal Candidate
  • Level 3 Diploma in Children’s and Young People’s Workforce, or willingness to begin within three months of appointment

  • Ability to communicate clearly in spoken English to support children, families and colleagues

  • Experience of working with children or young people, or within a care or learning disability setting

  • Someone who understands or is willing to learn about the communication needs of children with learning disabilities
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with children, families and colleagues
  • A caring and resilient approach, with the ability to remain calm in challenging situations

Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we’ll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use. We’re unable to confirm an appointment until these documents are received.

As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we’ll carry out an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, (unless you are currently registered with the DBS Update Service).
