An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new Chair of Rotherham’s Town Board. This is a great opportunity for someone who can bring organisations and businesses together to represent stakeholders in an open and collaborative forum. While applicants from a range of backgrounds are encouraged, it is essential that the Chair can demonstrate a deep connection to Rotherham, a commitment to seeing change through and a passion for improving the lives of the residents of Rotherham. Candidates with strong leadership qualities and private sector experience are particularly encouraged, and those who are able to provide a long-term commitment to supporting the work of the town board in partnership with Rotherham Borough Council.

Training can be provided, and travel costs reimbursed. Please note that appointment of the new Chair is subject to a clear DBS check and two references.

The successful independent Chair is a proactive, trustworthy convenor who:

• Is deeply connected to Rotherham and fiercely committed to making it an even better place to live.
• Can bring together different voices from across the network of organisations and businesses in Rotherham, to shape a collective vision for the future of their place.
• Has local credibility and will be respected as a leader.

• Is fair and balanced and ensures that all voices are heard and that Board discussions are collaborative.
• Is adept at finding consensus and navigating conflict calmly and impartially,
• Is clear about their own knowledge gaps and considers how the makeup of the Board complements this.
• Thinks logically and creatively about solutions to problems.
• Acts as a public face and represents the Board externally

• Open to learning, feedback and development, and an interest in mentoring and upskilling others
• Has a welcoming manner, is open and listens deeply to others
• Has time to prioritise the role

Current membership and the board’s role

The main role of the Town Board is to support effective local decision-making and drive long-term regeneration and investment across the borough. The current town board is comprised of key stakeholders in Rotherham such as representatives from local businesses, voluntary and community groups, those working in education, media outlets, South Yorkshire Police and Council services. As Rotherham moves into a new bold era of Regeneration, the new Chair will play a central role in shaping the future remit of the board.

Logistics of the role

• Meeting every 6-12 weeks either online or in-person, usually at Rotherham Town Hall
• 1 week prior to the Town Board, the chair will be expected to meet with RMBC officers for a briefing.
