Job summary

We have an exciting position available at RNAS Culdrose located in the beautiful Cornish countryside. The role consists in two parts, firstly, that of the Duty Flying Supervisor (DFS), where you will ensure that all Flying Activity is carried out in accordance with Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Regulatory Articles. Emphasis is always placed on conducting all flying activities with maximum Flight Safety while minimising the risk to all parties. Secondly, if there is an incident, you will perform the duties as the MOD Post Crash Management Incident Officer (PCMIO) at 3hrs notice to deploy from Culdrose, in accordance with MAA instructions within our area of responsibility. It is a very rewarding position, working with the best Military and Civilian personnel at the hub of a busy Royal Navy Air Station that conducts a wide range of support to both operational tasking and training activities.

Employment will be offered on a 'Full-time' contract of 1,924 hours (per annum) and will attract an additional all -encompassing allowance - `All Hours Worked Allowance' -12.5% of basic pay.

Job description

Working alongside Regular and Reserve service personnel from across the Armed Forces, the successful candidate will join an established team of ex-military personnel, where you will be taught how to best utilise your aviation related background and qualifications to enhance the Supervision of Flying Activities at RNAS Culdrose and the satellite airfield at Predannack as part of the DFS team, you will contribute to a working routine that provides cover 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

The main task of the permanent DFS is to ensure flying operations are conducted in accordance with current military regulations and ensuring appropriate de-confliction of complex multi-force activities. Successful candidates will be responsible to the Aerodrome Operator, through Lieutenant Commander Flying, the station-level Officer in Charge of flying at both locations.

This involves the supervision of planned day and night flying, as well as unplanned out of hours activity at both Culdrose and Predannack. Operating from within the Air Traffic Control Tower at Culdrose, you will have an understanding of the facilities required to deliver safe operations and ensure that all departments always apply Correct Procedures and Policies while conducting all Flying Related Activities safely as possible. All activity is assessed against As Low as Reasonably Practicable (ALARP Risk Assessment Model). You will also be a member of the Air Safety Organisation and related safety working groups.

The second part of this role is to be on standby to respond as required as the MOD Aircraft PCMIO for Culdrose’s Area of Responsibility; currently Devon and Cornwall. This has the potential for short period (potentially one or two weeks subject to requirement), self-drive, accommodated deployment, potentially in field conditions.
In addition, all DFS are allocated some secondary duties. All DFS assist with organisation of exercises and other duties including the review and amendment of local aviation documentation; line management and reporting duties for other Civil Service personnel within RNAS Culdrose's Air Department; oversight of the Wildlife Control Unit. Other management tasks may include maintenance of the DFS and APCMIO rosters to ensure continuous cover.

The post may involve flexible working and unsociable hours that will include working Bank and Public Holidays. There will be a minimum of one weekend in four required to support resident very high readiness units whilst de-conflicting G-Reg activities while the aerodrome is closed. Much of the post holder's time is spent liaising between Air Traffic Control, Air Operations, Fire and Rescue Services, other Airfield Services and station based and external flying units.

Navy Command are currently going through a review and there is a possibility that within 6-12 months the role applied for may be subject to change.

The successful candidate will have strong verbal, written communication and organisational skills, with a proactive, flexible and attention to detail, mindset. We are looking for a candidate who has the skills to confidently engage with both internal and external stakeholders.

We are looking for a Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person, (SQ EP), a person that can adapt to this rewarding lifestyle, however the individual will be given training and opportunities to gain the correct mandatory qualifications to comfortably sit alongside the established DFS Team. Exploitation of data to make evidence-based decisions relating to Safe Flying Operations and Post-Crash Management duties.
