Salary: £26,832 - £28,146 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus hourly enhancement Market Premia

Working Hours: 37 hours per week

Contract Type: Permanent

About the Role

A seasonally based best value, customer-focused service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties. You will maintain the condition of the road network through the application of surface dressing material over the summer period, and, during winter months, provide precautionary night salting treatments to ensure safe passage along the highway.

Activities include Surface Dressing, Winter Service Gritting, Snow Clearance, Flood Prevention Stock Preparation and other LGV driving.

The nature of the work may involve you carrying out activities outside of normal working hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays, in all weather conditions to meet the needs of the service. You may be required to support a call-out rota to cover evening, weekend and public holiday emergencies. (Exclusion will apply to employees aged under 21)

This role is a “Safety Critical Post” and, consequently, subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with our policies and procedures. A copy of our Substance Misuse Policy and Procedure is available upon request.

About You

To apply for this post, you must be able to evidence in your application how you meet the following criteria:

  • The following qualifications: NVQ 2 in Highways Maintenance or similar, Skilled Road-worker Trades Test Assessment, City & Guilds 6159 Winter Service Operations, Valid driving licence, Valid Large goods Vehicle Licence and CPC Trained with current DQC Card, Valid Tele-Handler or Lift Truck Licence OR have demonstrable evidence of the skills and experience as outlined in the job description, together with a commitment to attain the essential qualifications
  • Experience of working in a highways or civil engineering environment, are able to take measurements and calculate quantities, e.g. areas, volumes and weights and use information technology (e.g. personal computer, PDS, mobile phone, etc) in a work-related context
  • Extensive knowledge of construction specifications, materials, compaction, and workmanship requirements, as well as safe working practices when using plant and machinery
  • Knowledge about Construction Health, Safety and Environmental requirements and safe working procedures, legislation including driver’s hours, PPE and manual handling and of Chapter 8 Traffic Management Regulations
  • Ability to drive and work in adverse weather conditions
  • You can and are willing to work with everyone in the team. You are able to use your own initiative in planning and prioritising, and to respond confidently to customers & colleagues with understanding & diplomacy whilst maintaining an objective & professional stance. You engage with proposals constructively & rigorously to help agree a way forward
  • Ability to constructively challenge poor performance and/or behaviour, and are able to remain calm & positive in challenging circumstances
