Luton is proud to be a Child Friendly Town, committed to ensuring that all children and young people – including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) – have access to the same opportunities as their peers. We’re working together to create a town where every child has a voice that is heard, valued, and acted upon, and where children with SEND can thrive and achieve excellent educational outcomes.

We are now seeking a dedicated, experienced and passionate SEN Home Visitor – Pre-School to join our specialist team, playing a key role in supporting Luton’s youngest children with complex and significant needs.

As an SEN Home Visitor, you will:

  • Work closely with families, professionals, and early years providers to identify and assess the special educational needs of pre-statutory school-aged children.
  • Deliver high-quality, specialist teaching to children with significant and complex needs in their home environment or early years settings.
  • Lead on successful transitions from home learning to early years settings, reducing barriers and empowering families through early support.
  • Provide SEND advice and interventions that are evidence-based and outcome-focused, ensuring practices are aligned with statutory guidance and local policy.
  • Produce comprehensive assessments, reports, and plans to support each child’s development and learning journey.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About you

We are looking for an exceptional Early Years practitioner who brings:

  • A minimum Level 3 Early Years qualification (e.g. NVQ3, CACHE, BTEC, HND).
  • In-depth knowledge of child development and a strong understanding of the EYFS framework.
  • Experience of working with children with SEND and delivering tailored interventions.
  • A solution-focused, flexible approach and the ability to work independently and proactively.
  • Confidence in working in a range of physical environments, including homes and nurseries (you’ll often be working at floor level and transporting resources).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and coaching skills to support and collaborate with parents and professionals.
  • A commitment to inclusive practice, with sensitivity to diversity and the unique needs of each family.
  • Willingness to undertake Portage training/accreditation within one year of appointment.

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of a visionary local authority that puts children at the heart of everything we do.
  • Work in a dynamic, supportive team with a shared passion for inclusion and early intervention.
  • Access ongoing professional development, including nationally recognised Portage training.
  • Help shape a better future for children and families in your community.

Other Requirements

  • You must be able to travel across Luton flexibly and at various times of the day.
  • This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS Check.

Application Process

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.

On occasions, we may close a vacancy early due to a very high number of applications being received.
