Job description
The Senior Adviser - Policy roles sit in DESNZ private office and are designed to support the decision-making of ministers through providing dedicated policy expertise within the private office setting.
Private Office is part of the Strategy Directorate in DESNZ, supporting the Secretary of State and wider Ministerial team to deliver on the Government's priorities for energy security and net zero.

Due to business requirements this post is full time. Candidates will be expected to be in the office on average 4 days per week, though it is possible to work from home more often during periods of Parliamentary recess.
Person specification
The successful candidate will:
- Provide technical policy advice within the private office setting on a number of areas of expertise. We do not expect detailed policy knowledge across all of the Department’s areas, and portfolios and projects will be allocated based on the successful candidates’ experience and expertise.
- Work with private office and the wider department to ensure policy advice going to ministers is robust and reflects ministerial priorities.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging sectoral and policy trends.
- Offer constructive challenge to DESNZ policy teams, working with teams to consider and trial innovative ideas.
- Work with analysts to ensure that robust evidence informs ministerial decision making.
- Support private secretaries in developing their own subject-matter expertise.
Essential Criteria
- Strong understanding of DESNZ’s priorities, and direct experience working in depth on numerous priority policy areas.
- Experience progressing policy from conceptualisation through to delivery.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including in high-pressure environments.
- Keen eye for detail, and comfortable engaging with technical, analytical content.
- Ability to prioritise across multiple competing priorities.
- Confident operating at senior levels, building relationships with key stakeholders to deliver.

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
