Job description

This role sits within our Health and Safety Team, as part of The People Team, supporting the whole of Natural England.

We provide professional advice, guidance and assurance to colleagues in relation to the health and safety risks posed to staff, volunteers, contractors and the public by Natural England’s work activities to ensure colleagues can make sensible decisions that safeguard themselves and others from harm.

We particularly encourage applications from H&S professionals with leadership skills and those with experience of tackling complex strategic issues such as work-related stress.

Job description

Health and Safety covers all risks that may cause injury or ill health including matters related to mental health such as work-related stress. The remit is organisational wide and may be reactive and proactive in nature.

Senior Health & Safety Officers work agilely in one of two main work areas; H&S Business Partnering, providing advice and support to leadership teams across NE or Programme Delivery, managing a series of projects to ensure colleagues have access to effective resources and supporting the organisation to tackle strategic issues such as work-related stress.

The role requires the development of a broad knowledge of NE’s purpose and the relevant frameworks and practical activities that may impact or influence the effective delivery of project results.

Key Tasks/Principal Accountabilities

  • Provide professional advice and guidance to leadership teams and H&S Leads on the H&S risks posed to staff, volunteers, contractors, and the public by Natural England’s work activities to ensure they have the information needed to manage those risks effectively.
  • Support and steer senior leaders and their teams regarding their H&S responsibilities to ensure they have the information needed to manage the H&S risks across their Area Team/Directorate.
  • Respond to serious H&S incidents by liaising with witnesses, injured persons, the Regulator and senior leaders to ensure a full investigation is carried out and responsive actions are taken to prevent a recurrence.
  • Review incidents and near misses to ensure risks are identified, mitigating actions are put in place and learning is shared.
  • Analyse, interpret and present data and produce compelling communications
  • Produce or review H&S policies and guidance in line with relevant legislation, industry best practice and Natural England policy to provide clear accessible information that supports colleagues to make good choices about risk management for themselves and others.
  • Share intelligence from customer interactions and professional networks to help inform the organisation’s strategic approach to risk.

Lead and make significant contribution to their area of expertise in H&S to ensure that their projects and work objectives are delivered in accordance with agreed timescales.
