State Threats refer to overt or covert action orchestrated by foreign governments which falls short of general armed conflict between states but nevertheless seeks to undermine or threaten the safety and interests of the UK, including: the integrity of its democracy, its public safety, its military advantage and its reputation or economic prosperity. State threats are persistent and take many forms, including espionage, political interference, sabotage, assassination and poisonings, electoral interference, disinformation, propaganda, cyber operations, and intellectual property theft. The National Security Act, which received Royal Assent in July 2023, has introduced a range of new and updated tools for law enforcement and intelligence agencies to deter, detect and disrupt state threats activity.
Summary
The job holder reports to the Principal Registered Psychologist. The Senior Registered Psychologist within Directorate of Security will be responsible for the delivery of specialist psychological services across the geographical or functional area which comprise the relevant services. This will include provision of professional support to the psychology staff involved in this work. Regular weekly travel to London offices will be required (2-3 days per week). This may change as the role develops.
Key responsibilities include delivering comprehensive psychological assessments, developing detailed case formulations, and providing recommendations for sentence planning and ongoing case management. The Senior Registered Psychologist will provide feedback from field work to key stakeholders via the Principal Psychologist to aid strategy and policy development.
The role also includes staff supervision, training, consultancy and research. Strong expertise in complex case management, risk assessment tools, ideology presentation, and evidence based practice, alongside advanced skills in teamwork, consultation, training, and clinical leadership.
A key component of the job role will be to promote collaborative working across directorates, senior managers, operational colleagues and relevant stakeholders. Funding for the post will be reviewed annually.

This post requires the post holder to act as a co-ordinating (clinical) supervisor for trainees undertaking recognised training routes. To be eligible, the post holder should have two years post registration experience at the point of taking up post. However, applications will be welcomed from psychologists who have a minimum of 18 months post registration experience; although they will not be able to formally take up the post until they have been registered for two years.• Possess a professional background in Psychology
• Experience in providing clinical supervision
• Completed relevant training in effective models of treatment and best practise
• They are likely to also be a Chartered Psychologist and Full member of the appropriate division of the BPS if the post requires it.
• The post holder should have two years post registration experience at the point of taking up post although applications are encouraged from those with 18 months or more at the time of application.
