Job summary
The Secretary of State needs to maximise the impactful use of their time and external engagements to advance their priorities and the Government’s growth mission.
We are seeking an excellent Strategic Projects Adviser who can enable the Department to deliver for the Secretary of State and establish a programme of domestic visits that help to advance policy priorities and promote the positive impact DBT has had for businesses and working people through the UK.
Job description
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Producing strategic retrospective analysis of how the Secretary of State spends their time, and use that to influence and inform diary decisions in line with strategic priorities
- Working with our Business Engagement Adviser (and Business Engagement Unit) to increase the proportion of 'proactive' bids, aligned with the Secretary of State's priorities, designing and implementing a replacement for the invites process
- Working with our Domestic Visits Steering Group (comprised of visits team, business engagement unit and communications) and Special Advisers to shape the forward look of domestic visits based on the Secretary of State's priorities
- Working with the Delivery Unit to maximise the impact and utility of key departmental reporting for the Secretary of State, including the Start The Week pack, Single Master Calendar and Top 40 programmes dashboard
- Working across the Department to support the delivery of the Secretary of State’s programme for the International Investment Summit
- Working with the Digital Comms team and Special Advisers to identify opportunities to maximise SoS’ use of new media formats

Essential criteria
The below criteria are essential and will be assessed at application stage.
- Experience working with ministers within Private Office or with C-Suite executives.
- Proven experience bringing together ministerial/and or C-Suite visits and digital communications plans
- Strong coordination and relationship-building skills – comfortable working across teams and with senior stakeholders to support external engagement and domestic visits
- Clear communicator with an eye for impact – can distil complex information into useful insights and ensure the Secretary of State receives what he needs to make decisions and drive delivery
